I love the lens. Under the right circumstances (no backlight), it creates magic.

I love shooting with the 50mm pre-asph as well. I also like to shoot against the sun but I find the flare is very well controlled and comparable to the asp version which I also have. The asph version also tends to flare pretty badly under certain conditions.

I got rid of all bulky RF lenses. To be honest, if lens is bulky it doesn't inspires me at all. Compact camera and lens are calling for adventures. Character lenses, not so much. I prefer reality to be rendered without special effects.

I'm 100% with you on this. In my Leica M10, I don't want big lenses, for daily use.

I don't think so 🤣 I'm an M lover, and as you I prefer small optics. But I also appreciate IQ. And a 35/1.4 Distagon can give me this quality that you can't reach with other small lenses. If I have to travel to Mongolia for a months, I would bring only a few small lenses. As you said:

But if I have a shooting in my own town, and I don't carry much time all gear, I would happy to bring a Distagon too, 100 times.

In resume, the Distagon is not inspiring for travel. At least fro me. But it could be an inspiring lens for other things. Now that I have the 35 Nokton II MC and the Biogon 2.8, I would love to add a Distagon in the future.

Agree

I can’t stand ZM lenses. Sorry for honest opinion, they are just huge and ugly. Pimple instead of focus tab and cruel, too many clicks aperture ring.

Some should really like ZM rendering to withstand those ugly lenses.

I would get ZM 28 2.8 because of its rendering; but it is prone to Zeiss wobble due to wrong choice of materials.

Sorry…. 35 1.4 blocking VF sucks. This is why I was waiting for years to 35 1.4 II VM to show up. The lens is the jewel.

yes

I agree with you with all. But If I have enough time, not on rush, I don't care about aesthetics, wobble, focus tab etc. as long if the lens deliveries outstanding performance. And the distagon is one of the best 35mm performer in the world.

Just saying.

What do you mean by "special effects" ?

I thoroughly dislike the 50 Lux asph. If I had to use the term Milquetoast to describe a lens, it would be that lens.

Don't understand...can you develop?

Yes, do not sell the lens ! I have always regretted selling a Leica M lens. I wish I had every one of them back. Ultimately when I trace my thought processes, I find I was actually only trying to finance a new lens. GAS!

Help me, please...who said...never sell a Leica lens 😀

For me, the Voigtlander 35mm f1.4 was always the lens that inspire me to take all kind of shots. From portraits to architecture, family shots and street photography. That lens is still one of my favorite lens but recently I am more happy with my 35mm f1.4 Distagon. And if I have to choose one, I would take the Distagon. The size & weight was something that I didn't like in the first couple of months. But since I shoot exclusively with it, I prefer the overall usability / ergonomics a lot in comparison to the little Nokton
The focusing on the Distagon feels way more precise and charming in comparison with the Nokton, to me. And this means a lot because I was always the focus tab type of guy. The aperture ring is in my opinion the most beautiful aperture ring I have ever seen, heard, used and I am a huge fan of those ⅓ clicks. And as many are annoyed by the viewfinder blockage, it has never bothered me since I have the lens.
The image quality / rendering is the cherry on the cake - I love the overall sharpness beginning at f1.4 and the bokeh rendering a lot lately. Some of my friends thought I got a medium format camera / lens when they saw the results.

I didn't expect this coming, because how you described how much you love the Nokton. But it totally makes sense. Congrats!

Which one will you bring on your next travel? Distagon cause the IQ? Or the Nokton because size and weight? 🤔

As long as you are happy 😀

Very happy. I was out shooting with the lens today, and no flare at all. Only lots of (Mandler) magic!

I guess I just have to learn about its pecularities. 😉

Yes, I wasn't expecting this as well. But somehow, I prefer the rendering a lot more lately and of course the size. And I have to admit, that I didn't had the opportunity to use the Zeiss on great weather conditions before, maybe this plays a role, too.
Easy decision: The Zeiss! I will use the Voigtlander only for specific cases for now on where I want that look. But for daily photography I prefer the Zeiss so much more at the moment. Now, I feel the Nokton is way too small, unfortunately. Big surprise for me!

I have the zeiss distagon and the nokton 40mm sc and for people i always use the nokton because although i like the way the zeiss renders people i  much prefer the nokton.

For landscape the zeiss is mostly more suitable than the nokton and is technically a top class lens but i seldom use 35mm for my landscape stuff.

I only bought the nokton because i saw a good used deal and didnt even realise it was the sc version until it arrived but now its my favourite people lens, funny old world.

I've given the question posed by the OP some thought. It is a difficult question for me because to me, gear is anything but inspiring. Gear is distraction, a burden.  Having too much gear, too many lenses results in a sort of artistic constipation. I prefer to have only one or maybe two lenses to choose from. These must be competent and not intrusive. The photo is not about the lens. It should never be about the lens (except in the special case when it is, as when doing a lens test for example...but these are the most boring of photos). So what inspires me to make a photograph? For me, more than anything, it is about the light. I guess that's why, I'm not particularly inspired to make photos in the summer. The light is directly over head and harsh....boring. Sometimes in the morning or later in the evening it can be ok but mostly it's just crap. I prefer to photograph in the winter and during or just after a good rain.
