Hello all!

I am happy as a clam with my SL2 and Leica lenses.

However:

I find myself needing to use specialty lenses from time to time. I am lucky enough to have access to Canon EF glass -at no charge- that either don't have Leica equivalent in existence or just not worth the price for what I do with it eg: 24 Tilt-lenses, 16-35f2.8, 300f4, 100 Macro....  and an array of Canon CN-E and Zeiss cinema lenses in EF mount. Some with electronic contacts, some without.

I read many conflicting things about the sigma MC 21 adapter with SL2. In addition to this the price varies wildly in the UK, from £99 up to £249.

My questions are:

- Can one use IBIS with Canon EF lenses? With or without electronic contacts?

- Can stabilised lenses use their own stab systems with this adapter?

- I heard only AF-S works - at its own pace - that's fine. On all lenses?

- Does using the MC 21 on SL2 triggers the "can't shoot 4K" low power at higher than usual level? Like other non Leica lenses?

- any other restrictions or limitations worth knowing before taking the plunge? @michali and others I kindly ask you :)

Take care!

Can one use IBIS with Canon EF lenses? With or without electronic contacts?

YES. with cinema lenses you have to tape the contacts of the adapter and then you can select from R menu lenses for IS. If you don't use take the menu is not accessible.

Older AF lens are not suitable for the adapter. AF is difficult, look compatible lenses on sigma.

- Can stabilised lenses use their own stab systems with this adapter?

It works with some lenses. 24-105mm works

- I heard only AF-S works - at its own pace - that's fine. On all lenses?

works slower than Leica lenses in AFs .  focus goes past and then comes back to focus.
Check list with sigma website. some don't work.

AF menu is greyed out, you go MF on the lens and AFc is not an option or realistic anyway.

- Does using the MC 21 on SL2 triggers the "can't shoot 4K" low power at higher than usual level? Like other non Leica lenses?

YES, in 4K video and Burst.  Battery grip necessary or and USB-C with quick care power bank ( Many of them don't supply with power)

- any other restrictions or limitations worth knowing before taking the plunge?

Works great on the TS-E lenses.

Hi Slender,

Photoworks has summed things up well in his reply, my experience is similar to what he's described. The MC-21 works quite well with newer Canon lenses, on older lenses it can be hit & miss.

Focus is reasonably fast & accurate, AFS only no AFC.

The lens' stabilisation works well despite the camera's IBIS being greyed out.

I don't shoot video so can't help there.

The Novoflex adapter in the post above is just about useless on the SL2. Sigma MC-21 is the only one to use.

Best,

Mike

Thank you very much @michali@Photoworksand @frame-it. Interesting about the NovoFlex I also heard it became non-functional outside of SL601.... cheeky german competition.

So if I understand correctly, if I want IBIS, I need to tape contacts.
But which ones?

Lens->MC-21

or

MC-21-> Camera

?

If you are using the canon 24-70 EF lens you need the contacts to change F-stops and the adapter transmits the info to the camera and your get sensor IS.

if you are using cinema EF mount  lenses with gear F-stop and manual focus and no contacts there is no need for electronic transmission . In this case you cover the contacts of the adapter to the camera so that is becomes an adapter without electronic coding. you do this to enable the menu the lens selection in the camera and activate sensor IS.

Just to add my experience Canon EF mount lenses on SL2 using Sigma MC-21 Adaptor, no taping!   AFS only- no AFC.

With stabilised lenses like 70-300L and  100-400II via MC-21 - you are able to use the lens stabilisation... IS stays greyed out on SL2, even if you disable IS on the lens.

With non stabilised lenses ef 135 f/2 - 100mm Macro (Tokina) you have the option to turn on Camera Stabilisation. My experience has been when you mount the adaptor and lens IS is always shown as off in the menu and you have to turn it on each time.

Sorry - no experience with video.

I wonder if the price variation you notice in the UK is because you are seeing MC-21 SigmaAF-L mount, which are significantly cheaper than the MC-21 EF-L mount, I seem to remember a few being caught out by purchasing the wrong one.

You can also buy contactless EF-to-L mount adapters. C7 Adapters sells a frightfully expensive one for professional work (it has a breech-lock tightening mechanism), but you will also find cheap no-name ones available at the usual internet suppliers of dodgy goods. It's a lot more convenient than taping-up a Sigma adapter.

So that is the worrying bit: Under the Sigma MC-21 name, there are two variations??? 🤯

Same name (MC-21) diffèrent nomination (SA-L) but same pictures....

So its not the same thing?

@Boojay@Photoworks@michalisorry for being a bit thick in the skull for this one topic, and thank you very much for your kind help.

No, not the same at all.  First is for Sigma Mount Lenses to L, hence SA-L

What is a SA-mount lens?
The Sigma SA-mount is a lens mount by the Sigma Corporation of Japan for use on their autofocus single-lens reflex and mirrorless cameras. It was introduced with the SA-300 in 1992.

Second is the one you are looking for Canon EF to L mount.

Wilkinson UK have good price at present
