Guest Bernd Banken Posted August 28, 2007 Share #21 Posted August 28, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) long time ago, a friend and I made camping at the Cote d'Azur near Toulon. We had a Hobie 14 and a Windsurfer at the concret beach of Le Pradé. After a sunny day full of exciting watersport, my buddy put our car key on the roof of the car next to ours without any thinking. So after getting out of the wetsuit I asked him for the key and we recognized that this car had gone....with the key....arrrghhhh At the end of the day we slept one week in the car with a rotating system, our tent was at the camping ground some few kilometers away. Due to this bad luck we met fantastic young french people and had a lot of fun. My mother sent the sparekey so at the end everything went ok. Paul Hart Posted August 28, 2007 Share #23 Posted August 28, 2007 ... an anonymous brown box won't attract attention, so it might still be there. ...unless the Bomb Squad had other plans for it. Seriously, I hope it's still there!
Speenth Posted August 28, 2007 Share #24 Posted August 28, 2007 ... there's a box with two newly delivered Leica 49mm filters in it. I drove off with it on top of my car and was half-way to London by the time I realised. What a dummy! Everybody does this at sometime! My tale is one of the innate honesty of ordinary people. In deep, darkest, rural Welsh Wales I drove off unaware I'd left my entire collection of Canon kit on the roof. Two or three hours later I arrived in Camarthen and discovered my mistake. Resigned to the loss (and the insurance claim) I went to the local police station. As soon as I began to describe the tragedy the desk sergeant said; "It was Canon EOS. Am I right sir"? It transpired a farmer, following me on his tractor, saw my camera bag fly gracefully into a muddy ditch. He'd rescued it, taken it home, found my details inside and reported it to his local nick. I drove all the way back, found the little farm down a gravelly track and enjoyed tea and biscuits with my saviour. Needless to say, he wouldn't take a penny and I left with my faith in the goodness of humanity elevated once more (it regularly dips down again of course). Incidentally, the bag was muddy, but the kit was totally undamaged - thank heavens for the permanently soft and gooey verges of your average Welsh valley! carstenw Posted August 28, 2007 Share #25 Posted August 28, 2007 Not quite the same but almost as bad: Many years ago after I had just started work I left a shop with a new goggled chrome 35mm Summicron in it's red felt lined box. I tripped and fell at the edge of the pavement (sidewalk). The lens shot out of the box and into the road. It was picked up and caught between the rear wheels of a heavy truck where it was flung up against the tailboard before falling back into the road. It was then run over by several more trucks. That's the only time I've used the Leica Passport for the repair. Bob. Did you take any photos of that lens before it was fixed? That would be a story to tell the grandchildren for sure. I once drove off with a case of beer on the roof. I realised, and slowed down very gently, and it was still there!

marknorton Posted August 29, 2007 Author Share #27 Posted August 29, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Good news, bads news. The good news is, I found the box by the side of the road. The bad news is the filters have been modified for use on a pancake lens. Both squashed and shattered! Never mind, I've ordered two more.
