I recently purchased a new 28 cron and it arrived sealed however the barrel of the lens is stamped 35mm and the top is stamped 28mm. The lens is actually a 28 Cron. Should I exchange for a new one or is there any collectors value with this type of defect?

As strange as it sounds, you may have just won the Leica lottery.

Could also inspire a limited edition 28 cron "in the spirit of 35", in which the 35 stamped on the barrel serves as a steadfast reminder to the photographer to compose photographs with a 35-mm crop focus in mind, while still providing the context of a 28-mm classic.  Ingenious.  Totally worth a premium price for that constant reminder.

The outer box SN matches the front SN but the insert inspection card has an entirely different SN. I'm guessing someone out there received a 35 cron with a 28 stamp.

In this case, two winners...!

I'll bet Leica is in a frenzy right now, frantically unboxing and checking all the 28 Summicrons they have on hand in Wetzlar.

Same for Leica stores around the globe.

Being the manufacturer, they can stamp whatever they want on the barrel, and purposely make a collectable lens...

Pretty weird - sounds like the whole base ring (with DoF scale and 6-bit code) are interchangeable parts between 35 (Summilux? Summicron?) and the 28 Summicron.

Not totally surprising - since the Summarit line (and the 21/24 Elmarit-M ASPHs) saved some costs by using common parts, where possible.

Frankly, a 35mm DoF scale is probably more useful for figuring 28mm DoF on digital - most people already recommend using a smaller aperture than the scale (which is designed for letter-sized prints from film) suggests, to actually get things apparently sharp at the extremes. ;)

But the 28 mis-identified by 6-bit code (and frameline selection) as a 35 may result in "wrong" corrections for color edge stains or vignetting.

So I had my test certificates mixed up (I also bought a 28SL). The SN matches on the outer box, inspection card and lens.

Sounds like someone just grabbed the wrong component during assembly.  Amazing that inspection didn't catch the error though!

Can you post a photo or three?

Let me know if you want other views. I'm probably going to exchange it tomorrow unless someone wants to make me an offer 😁

Herr Barnack could offer you $0.5 billion, thereby creating a win-win situation for both of you!

It's only collectible if it still works, and this won't work properly so it's junk. Forget everybody wetting themselves, this is entirely the wrong components not just an engraving error.

Yeah, planning to just send it back. Very interesting though.
