Hi,

some time ago I bought the Elmarit-R 135mm f2.8 (fantastic lens!).

I wanted to use some filters now, however I am not able to screw the (55mm) step up filter.

By the way, what is the purpose of the metallic ring you see in the picture attached?

Thank you

Flipping the ring 14161, you may find the answer "VII" at opposite.

This ring is here to use Serie VII filter, old type once common (some decades ago) without screw like modern filter.

all you need to know on Series filters

Thanks, that is clear to me, but I want to use my normal screw-in filters. As I understand it, I can manage to achieve this with a 54mm to 55mm step up filter first, which is unconventional, and then I can use my filters with additional step up filters if needed.

Cheers

You want to find this adapter ring: Leica Retaining Ring E55-Series 7 model number 14225.

Look around well for the best price. I eventually bought one at KEH for just under $20 US. Some people are asking quite a lot more for it.

The series 7 side will screw onto your lens, presenting the E55 side for any 55mm filters you might like to mount.

Good luck!

Neal, are you sure ?

I do have 14225 ring which is the other way around.

on mine " E55 7 " meaning this ring would be used on lens with E55 thread, but this ring would "hold" Serie 7 filter between the lens and the ring.

This 14225 would not screw in Wolan's lens ( needing 54mm screw size ) because of it's male/female 55mm screw.

Leica offered in the far past convertions from 54mm to 55mm for some lenses.

This ring 14225 was to use Serie VII filters on converted to E55 lenses.

have a nice read here for 14225 mysteries

Why this ring for me ?

I use this 14225 as glassless E55 male/female (E55 on both side) on my Canon LTM 1.2/50mm which has the first lens too near front, so screwing

normal E55 filter would "destroy" front lens.

Neal, your lens is of E55 filter size.

Please measure the front of your lens which is different "filter thread" from Wolan's even if same naming.

Or use 14161 ring if you have one, on your lens.

This is old discussion of the mysteries Serie 7 E55 ring 14225 or read my link above.

Wolan's lens is Serie VII size (screw 54mm) that indication of the ring 14161 on his pic.

If Wolan buy this 14225 ring, he will be disappointing.

Wolan, if you happend to have E49 filter, just try to drop it between the ring you have 14161 and your Elmarit-R 135.

E49 filter may work.

My lens has series 7 threads on the front, intended originally for the 14161 ring. I also have the 14161 filter retaining ring. Both the 14225 and 14161 male threads fit the lens perfectly and compare exactly when checked side by side on the table.

This is actually my third purchase of this lens, having bought and sold several in the past. I've owned both series 7 and E55 copies of the lens. For this last purchase, there was a long discussion I had with the seller about whether the lens was series 7 or e55 since I strongly preferred the latter. Of course, the seller didn't know for sure but eventually tried to mount an E55 filter on it but could not. The lens thread diameter was too small for the E55 filter. Only after I found the 14225 with some research was I willing to complete the purchase of the series 7 lens.

The 14225 really does work perfectly to adapt the series 7 lens threads to an E55 filter. I've been using it for some time that way with no problems whatsoever.

Best regards,
Neal
