Advertisement Posted March 18, 2021 Posted March 18, 2021 Hi Gavbo, Take a look here Black paint Leica parts - Genuine?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
250swb Posted March 18, 2021 Share #2 Posted March 18, 2021 The vulcanite looks like it's lifting and doesn't look like it fits very well either, but old glue can fail. It's also curious to compare this one with the other the same seller has, that one has an odd paint finish and looks like a repaint. On balance I say the door you are looking at is a repaint. andybarton Posted March 18, 2021 Share #3 Posted March 18, 2021 I really should sell my little collection of old lens hoods I never use. I could pay off my mortgage.

Since you have to remove the vulcanite to repaint the ASA dial, I am guessing it is repainted.
giannis Posted March 18, 2021 Share #5 Posted March 18, 2021 (edited) Are you getting a camera to use or are you trying to restore a collectible? In any case it's a bit silly to pay a huge markup for "original paint", it's just paint. Paint's contribution is just aesthetics (how the camera looks), if it looks the same, and it's functionally the same, then there's nothing more to it. Those are mass produced industrial goods, machine painted, it's not like an artist producing a unique painting. If you're willing to pay that much more for "original paint" it just incentivises unscrupulous sellers to repaint parts and resell them as the "premium" version (whatever colour scheme fetches the highest price), and none would be the wiser since there's no way to tell them apart if the correct hue is used in the repaint. In your case, yes it looks like a repaint. The pressure plate shows signs of use and the screws show marks. Yet the back is absolutely pristine. There's no chance the camera has seen even slight use, enough to leave some marks on the pressure plate, yet the back is in such immaculate condition. Now combine that with the marks on the screws, someone obviously unscrewed the pressure plate and screwed it back on, chances are they did that so they can repaint the back. To top it off, check the fit of the vulcanite on the left, chances are it's replaced (not only is it a bit smaller, but the radius of the corner doesn't match the radius of the corner on the camera back). It's an educated guess, but I'd say 99% chance it's a repaint. Edited March 18, 2021 by giannis typos
