Well having just had two days in London (the first time in over a year!), and taking only an M10 and 35 Summicron Asph mkI, I experienced a real sense of liberation after some months using the SL2 and the 24-90 foot landscape in Cumbria. It felt like exactly the right tool for the setting and was rock solid in terms of results.

Neither the lens nor the body felt as if they’d reached the end of their useful lives!

+40MP camera been there done that not needed for 99% of us. Only big or slower glass can resolve it then you never even see the difference even on your 4K monitor unless cropped in 1 to 1.

I'm happy with 24MP and either IBIS or better low light performance.

The M10 is far from obsolete and neither is any lens.

Chris, as an antidote to GAS and needing an M10R or an Apo whatever have you tried the 'Super Resolution' feature in the new ACR? It doubles image resolution. No really.

Control+Shift+D or down the right hand side of the screen find the three little dots that open a new menu and go to 'Enhance'.

I have played with this feature with some success. I've also played with the super resolution technique described on Mathphotographer's Youtube channel. It is a bit more work but his technique produces better results. Between both, I've probably saved over $30,000.

Interesting - I've had a play with this with a recent image (with my obsolete hardware...).  Original full frame followed by 100% crop and then 100% crop of the enhanced image.

Looking at the images, I have the following thoughts:

1. I'm very impressed by how well my old 35 summicron asp holds up - the detail and contrast in the crop are pretty good for a hand-held grab shop (the intention had been to crop into the lion and unicorn on the tower)

2. Using the Enhance feature in LR Classici, there is a tiny amount of additional detail in the enhanced image - but it's not that impressive...

3. Using the Super Resolution feature in ACR (which you can jump to from LR - a good guide here: https://lightroomkillertips.com/how-to-take-advantage-of-super-resolution-from-lightroom-classic/#:~:text=Super Resolution is an evolution,as does the horizontal resolution).) there's an astonishing increase in resolution and detailed.  I'm impressed. Obviously I wouldn't be printing at this level of detail, but it's clear that the Super Resolution enhanced image would hold up very well for a very large print.  Should the need arise, I'd be happy to use this for the occassional job.

Thank you for the link, which enabled me to have a first try with the "enhance" function.

I have always problems to compare pictures with completely different enlargements. Therefore I'd like to present the results which have the same enlargement from a small section of the "normal" and the "enhanced" version of a photo.

First as reference the complete photo from the M10 (the DNG has 30.4 MP) - unenhanced:

Now a small section from the lower center; normal version not enhanced:

Now approx. the same section enhanced (the complete enhanced DNG has 356 MP... 😞

So I stand corrected.

In #40 I was sure that the "artificial enhancement" couldn't reveal more details and sharpness than the "original" and only would lead to more artifacts.

Now I see that the "enhanced" version shows considerably more sharpness. There are artifacts - but they are as well on the unenhanced "original", e.g. the "rainbow" pattern in the writing "Hamburg" on the white boat, similar patterns on metal structures).

I shot this earlier today. M10 with a 50 Summicron (non-APO) and used ACR Enhance. I can see a lot more detail in the full size file but only a small improvement in this JPEG.

It looks to me as if it's painted that way on the boat.
