Just refresh the page and you can post again. Does not work for me, Andy. I just tried to post images of 955kb and 915kb and the system responded with a 'second file too big' error message (see below). I refreshed the page and tried again, still no success. As can be seen, somewhere in the upload process the forum software (for whatever reason) thinks a file of 955Kb is 1.5Mb. Had to resort (again) to separate posts. Welcome, dear visitor! Advertisement Posted March 22, 2021 Posted March 22, 2021 Hi Keith (M), Take a look here Friday (March 12th) Update Forum Software. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
piran Posted March 22, 2021 Share #122 Posted March 22, 2021 @Keith (M) Does Ctrl F5 work any better? It enforces cache clearance upstream (ISP, gateway & site). Alternatively ShiftControlDel and just tick 'cache' not the others unless you know what you are doing.
andybarton Posted March 22, 2021 Share #123 Posted March 22, 2021 That depends upon which OS you are using and which browser.
piran Posted March 22, 2021 Share #124 Posted March 22, 2021 @andybarton Not substantially. Keith's image URL looks as though it's from windows. Most browsers are now based on the chrome engine even Microsoft and Linux. Ctrl F5 is a hard refresh/reload not just locally but upstream. If Keith was not aware then I thought my positive suggestion would be helpful to him. A MAC key combo I believe is Command+Shift+R but I have less experience with Apple stuff. YMMV

piran Posted March 22, 2021 Share #126 Posted March 22, 2021 (edited) @Keith (M) Well then, I can't help much on the MAC stuff but the clearing cache can be problematic across the internet whatever the platform. Not only does your browser use cache but your site's gateway ISP and LUF's server do so too. Only a 'hard clear' clears 'their' cache. That's what the convoluted clear key combo does. It may be helpful to you to try the combinations that also includes the site's own 'Clear editor' link before or after your own clear. It's been said earlier in this thread that this long-running bug is fixed. So, whatever you can do may resolve. Or try another machine and/or OS and/or browser. I can only help specifically if I get out my wife's completely unused brand new MacBook and then teach myself MAC 🙂 I'm interested in your issue as I may be in the same boat shortly now that I have been bullied persuaded off using heavyweight PNGs. 😎 Without specifically favouring the site <this link> has a lot of clear cache stuff. I may fire up her shiny new toy later and see what transpires on her MAC. Edited March 22, 2021 by piran
Keith (M) Posted March 22, 2021 Share #127 Posted March 22, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) Using Cmd/Opt/e clears the cache but has no effect on the problem (I just tried it). The problem lies in the way the size of the uploaded file is increased during the uploading process - as mentioned earlier a 955Kb file lands on the forum as 1.5Mb! See post #121. piran Posted March 22, 2021 Share #128 Posted March 22, 2021 Noted. Hate to be the bearer of bad news... your previous link specifically cited TWO PNGs... the new software update for the forum does NOT handle PNGs properly... long story. Can you get your stuff to not use PNGs? Just an idea.
piran Posted March 22, 2021 Share #129 Posted March 22, 2021 (edited) What about trying to multiple load/drag the files - highlight two at once - that might stop the error forming? Not sure if that is feasible as I've only ever loaded single files. Edited March 22, 2021 by piran added stop
andybarton Posted March 22, 2021 Share #130 Posted March 22, 2021 I uploaded a 3.5MB JPG file this afternoon, into this thread (then hid it). The forum software compressed it such that the size shown is 1.09MB. The PNG version was 6.6MB, exactly the same as the file size on my Mac. Looking at the two versions of the same image, it's impossible to tell which is which.
piran Posted March 22, 2021 Share #131 Posted March 22, 2021 @Keith (M) Just tried multiple file (two) 'choose files' load (two 726KB small JPGs) and both were accepted simultaneously. So a multiple file 'choose files' might help you get around the second file error? @andybarton My own external 10yr old recompressor gets any PNG down to less than 10% larger than a JPG. Your new software doesn't or can't. Your point? I am not using PNGs anymore - the writing is on the wall - PNGs are for the chop. Also deemed not suitable for the forum. It's much bigger (px) JPGs all the way for me now.
andybarton Posted March 22, 2021 Share #132 Posted March 22, 2021 I don’t have a point. I was just saying that you cannot see any difference between the two alternatives.
piran Posted March 22, 2021 Share #133 Posted March 22, 2021 @andybarton JPG and 10% bigger (locally compressed) PNG Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! I couldn't see the difference either. Will now use much larger (px) JPGs now. Cheers. @Keith (M) I dragged these two files (JPG & PNG) from the Windows in a multiple file drag into this posting. No upload error cited. I think they are about the size you are trying. piran Posted March 22, 2021 Share #134 Posted March 22, 2021 @Keith (M) after the two files above and WITHOUT hitting any refresh or cache clear I uploaded this 2550px JPG straight afterwards without hitting an upload error Welcome, dear visitor! LocalHero1953 Posted March 22, 2021 Share #135 Posted March 22, 2021 As reported earlier in the thread, after the update I did not encounter the bug which requires you to refresh your browser before uploading a second image. I think the bug has gone (I hope so, anyway). 1
andybarton Posted March 22, 2021 Share #136 Posted March 22, 2021 Just a quick reminder of the Forum rules re image sizes
piran Posted March 23, 2021 Share #137 Posted March 23, 2021 (edited) @andybarton Oh... it was more than a reminder, I never knew that there was a rule on forum image size. I had assumed everything was predicated on the byte counter of the uploader. I did read your linked thread but am little wiser... being confused from LUFs OP of 3000px, through to a 2480px sweet spot magnification ratio, down to quite implausibly exact 2000KB and 1000KB sizes. TBH I have expected to be running out 2400px 2480px longest side images in future, these easily fit inside my 2.34MB upload allowance. PS: I get it now... I thought your lightbox was some MAC or ADOBE term or something, it's actually the '+' expanded viewing panel. To be fair I ran the test 2550px upload above to thoroughly max out any upload cache/noncache to demonstrate to @Keith (M) it was possible even after uploading a pair of small files without a cache clear (ie that the particularly long running bug appears to have been addressed). To reiterate I expect 2400px 2480px JPG submissions to be my norm in the future so I sincerely trust that this will be appropriate and allowable to all concerned. Finally may I congratulate you personally on your magnificent river Thames picture, taken from the upstream end of the lock and facing the weir at Marlow-on-Thames. I spent my final years at school rowing out of M.R.C. and your picture instantly brought back distant memories of what were the very best times I ever had at school. Thank you 🙂 Edited March 23, 2021 by piran amended 2400px to 2480px

piran Posted March 23, 2021 Share #139 Posted March 23, 2021 @andybarton Agreed. Sometimes scary too... looking upwards from the bottom of the deep lock, sitting at the front (bowman) of a paper-thin plywood shell Eight and even thinner stretched faux canvas a scant few inches from the boiling turbulence and noise of the upstream sluice gates refilling the lock. Then having to row out hard to get away from the risk of being dragged into or over that weir (no life-aids) in order to return back to the safety of the boathouse. Gathering motorised cruise boats hovering to enter the lock didn't make things any easier. If I find another issue with the new software I'll plug it into this thread.
