i'm using the multi or area metering and the exposure algorithm in this camera is pretty amazing, btw. i'd have to work real hard using the spot meter and what i remember of the zone system to match it.

anyway, today i noticed something and wanted to try to confirm it. i metered a scene using the 28mm focal length and the display showed blinky blown out highlights. then i set the fl to 75mm and the blinkies disappeared. does this mean the meter 'shrinks' its metering area restricted to the framelines for the focal length? tks, /guy

Interestingly, it does this regardless of whether you are shooting DNG, JPEG or both. I’ve only ever noticed a 1-stop or so difference depending on the crop chosen but I suppose there is a slight risk that if you are shooting DNG (ie with the full 28mm coverage) and you change your mind in post-processing about how you want to crop the final image, it might be under/over exposed because the camera has metered from a smaller area elsewhere in the frame. I assume the dynamic range of the Q2 makes this a non-issue though.
