gteague Posted February 23, 2021 Share #1 Posted February 23, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) i'm using the multi or area metering and the exposure algorithm in this camera is pretty amazing, btw. i'd have to work real hard using the spot meter and what i remember of the zone system to match it. anyway, today i noticed something and wanted to try to confirm it. i metered a scene using the 28mm focal length and the display showed blinky blown out highlights. then i set the fl to 75mm and the blinkies disappeared. does this mean the meter 'shrinks' its metering area restricted to the framelines for the focal length? tks, /guy
Advertisement Posted February 23, 2021 Posted February 23, 2021 Hi gteague, Take a look here q2: exp area follows focal length?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
vedivv Posted February 24, 2021 Share #2 Posted February 24, 2021 Yes. Metering is within the cropped frame line.
ianforber Posted February 24, 2021 Share #3 Posted February 24, 2021 Interestingly, it does this regardless of whether you are shooting DNG, JPEG or both. I’ve only ever noticed a 1-stop or so difference depending on the crop chosen but I suppose there is a slight risk that if you are shooting DNG (ie with the full 28mm coverage) and you change your mind in post-processing about how you want to crop the final image, it might be under/over exposed because the camera has metered from a smaller area elsewhere in the frame. I assume the dynamic range of the Q2 makes this a non-issue though.
