I have taken good photos with any lens camera combination and need to remind myself that it is not about the gear.  It is just something about that character of the vintage lenses or the extreme detail of the modern ones that makes you feel that you are doing something wrong if you don’t have it!

I have both the 50mm Summilux pre-ASPH v3 and a 50mm Summilux ASPH Black Chrome. For me it's completely impossible to choose only one of these, because they are so different, and together they complement each other perfectly.

My advice is to do nothing. Make a conscious effort to use each one for one week, aiming to achieve the best possible results. Then move to a different one in the same focal length. Work through this cycle, several times so that each sees a similar range of uses. After six months, review the results and then decide which ones to keep.

It's a legitimate, smart, easy. It makes sense

And, I forgot, you will have then one 28, 35 and 50 w/ two cameras.

Traveling light? you choose one lens

Need combo, 28 w/ M10-P and the 50 w/ the M10-M ... such a great combo

@Dennis agreed on the travel combo.  Regardless of what i keep or sell, that is what i intend for travel.  I can’t imagine bringing the noctilux overseas or walking around with it all day.  I am also a bit shy about travelling some places with the summicron 8-element on account that it is difficult to replace and it was a gift from my wife.

I bought the 28 along with the M10P - finally got to use it today.  There was a big snowfall last night and the sun is shining.  The vignette works nicely against a bright white landscape and cloudless skies.

It's a good choice. Between all 50s available, if I could buy any lens (brand new), I would probably opt for the Lux E46, no doubt.

I am in your shoes😅. I have 50 Summilux v3 and ASPH. I can't decide which one to keep because of the same reason as yours.

To OP, I would sell all the 50mm and settle for a Summilux because: I don't care about the APO (it's no better in IQ at F1.4,) and I find that Noctiluxes are too big on my palm. As evikne argues, 50 Summilux pre-ASPH draws similarly to Noctilux pre-ASPH, I would also add that 50 Summilux ASPH draws very similarly to the 0.95.

I might add that I have exported all my Leica photos for random use in a screensaver. The pictures are annotated with the lens used. And every time I see a picture from an ASPH lens, I think: "That's the only lens I need!" And every time a picture from a pre-ASPH lens appears, I think: "That's the only lens I need!" 😂

Just so this is not a purely academic discussion...here is a shot today with the M10p and summaron 28.

Your image says a few things, one is that you shoot landscapes or scenes, the second is that you shoot during the day.  For this the 0.95 noctilux and the apo will outperform the summilux (all of them) for outright detail from f2 on.  Nonetheless, if I was to have one 50mm the Summilux Asph would be it for these situations, it's a phenomenal all-rounder.  Other situations, street and travel the v3 pre-asph is THE lens to own, and has to be experienced to understand how special it is, but you have the Noctilux f1 and that should give you something more akin to the v3 than the Asph.  Except for landscape (and there are exceptions to this exception) the digital sensors starting from the M10 are too sharp for my taste,  the older lenses impart a smoothness back to the digital process that I find more appealing.   If I do shoot my asph lenses often-times I turn down the clarity in post and that gives me a smoother image.

Leica is 50mm heaven, if you add the asph it would fit in nicely with the others, but then my philosophy is add first and subtract second or forget the last (subtraction) part.

Btw- great shot, there's something very appealing about the lone bird in the vastness.

Thank you @darylgo.  I am not sure this shot is indicative of my general work.  I always hope to photograph people, but people are not available at the moment... and certainly not available to get close to!

I like your idea of add first and then subtract.  You never get a fair comparison if you are going on memory and if you find you like one over another you are kind of stuck rebuying.  One also has a tendency to be nostalgic about previous gear.  I was just saying to someone this afternoon that maybe the solution is get the lux and then take some time with all of them and see which gets used and which feels right.  The way I am feeling at the moment is the Noctilux is a niche lens for me, and certainly not something I will walk around with.  I wonder if I would feel the same if I had a person to point it at.

I agree with you about the sensor.  Most of my Leica life was with the M9 or M9M.  I upgraded to the M10M a year ago. I just last week decided to try my hand at colour again and decided on the M10P over M10R for the same reason you are suggesting - which is why I also seem to be attracted to older lenses on the M10M (APO is the exception - something about it on the monochrom...).  I also specifically bought the M10P with the summaron so as to get that smoother, vintage feel.  Have not tried it on the M10M yet, but I am sure it will perform wonderfully.

Here are a couple with the F1 noctilux on the M10M.  This is why I have trouble parting with the lens...

Unless you'd rather have the cash, I don't see the point in selling any of you lenses. Nor do I see much point buying a different 50. You already have a good range. Just pick the one that suits your mood at a given time and roll with it.

Have to agree with you there, the noctilux shots are smooth, the background is unobtrusive.  The recommendations of the v3 were made I believe with this in mind, at 1.4 it will be more like the noctilux, whereas the asph will be more similar to the apo.
