Criticism welcome for both. The pose isn't the greatest for this one but I like the steps, wall, and shadow.

Great shots and beautiful woman.  In the first shot, I would have positioned the model slightly further to her right (maybe 1/2 inch) such that the light/shadow does not split her face in two almost equal halves.  In short, the light and shadows without a model are very symmetrical, and splitting the model's face symmetrically in halves is too much.

In the second shot, I would not change a thing.  It's perfect.  The stripes on the right are perpendicular to her thigh and make the shot interesting.

Both nicely done.

Thank you for taking the time to comment. I took about 10 shots with varying degrees of shadow and ended up liking this one the most but I can see what you mean. I tend to like things symmetrical which can be monotonous.

For the second image I took a forum members (Pete) advice and straightened the image so I’m happy with your comments about the stripes. 😎

I usually like a bit of angle to my shots but straightening strengthened this one for sure.

I am a fan of these shadow/light situations especially for b/w. You managed it very well, number two is perfect for me.

The shadow divides her face very symmetric in your first photo. Maybe a higher position of the photographer and a bit less room over her head would help to fully concentrate on her very intersting face. And, this is of course a matter of personal taste, I also would try to get one shot where she looks directly into the camera. The light would help to make her eyes very bright.

Hi there,

thank you for taking the time to comment and provide feedback. I appreciate it. If anyone knows portraits in shadow it is you! I enjoy your work and follow you on IG.

We got to the location a little late because she was running behind schedule and the sun was very direct. I should have been prepared with one of those big circular diffusers because the sun was blasting her in the face. Lol  I felt bad and didn’t want to torture her so very few of the images I took have her looking straight at me. I would have preferred more eye contact. Lessons learned every time I go out  😂

Thanks a lot! Your kind words are much appreciated! Would love to see more of this shooting, your light situation was perfect for b/w.
