A really good thread you have started and I understand GAS dilemmas :) I myself am on my way to leica land again. I have canon r5 and 1d X III which I keep as I use this for my primary tasks. But the new SL2 - S has seriously piqued my interest and I think my first lens should be the SL 35 Cron. What is your view on this lens compared to the 50 Cron SL. If you take the focal length out of the equation. I am thinking especially of the leica look in terms of how it draws?

I've never used the 35 cron. It's not a focal length I particularly like. My main go to lens is a 28mm - the Q2! That being said, I recently bought the Zeiss 35/1.4 Distagon. It was going for a good price and it's a very special lens. Lloyd Chambers raves about it being the best M lens - second to none.

Apo-Summicron 90 SL, ISO 100, f/2, 1/2500s (processed with C1) - not an occasional street shot (as it was a wedding-job), but some blurred-out foreground 😉. I wouldn't want to give up those additional 15mm, but your decision is sort of the other way round... . My problem is, that I have the 35mm SL, but don't use it really often, as I have the Q2 and those 28mm are quite close to the 35mm, so instead of changing lenses on my SL2 (from 90 to 35mm), I find myself taking the shot with my Q2, whenever I'm in a hurry...
I wrote about having the SL2 as a companion to the Q2 in the following thread, where I also posted the picture:

If the OP is already shooting with a SL, SL2, or SL2-S then he already has APS-C (or FF) available in-camera at the press of a button so no need to shell out more on a CL/TL2. 🙂

🙈 I stand corrected. Still not so familiar with the SL family. Perhaps it feels different instead of cropping. 😁

I love my 75mm Summicron-SL. My 50mm Summicron-SL too. And my Q2. I love how they all render.

Which is why I now WANT the 90mm Summicron-SL. The justification: for the compressed portrait look I like and the occasional street shots that blur out the background.

Could somebody please convince me that the 75mm can do all those things.

TIA

Just buy the SL 90 and call it a day. Not sure where you are located or if price is a concern (I assume it is else you wouldn't be asking whether to buy it) but I have seen used mint condition SL 90s go for $4,200-$4,400 in the USA.

I have used all 4 SL primes - 35 / 50/ 75 / 90. Sold the 75 as it is too close to 50 and 90. 50 and 90 are my favorites. If I had to keep one SL prime, it will be the 90 since I have the Q2 and for my use cases I am happy with cropping it upto 50mm.

Note that 90 does seem to hunt a bit more when focusing compared to the other SL primes is some situations. Could be my copy, but not a deal breaker for me.

Unfortunately the Leica MTF charts for the SL 90mm f/2 are slightly better than for the SL 75 f/2.  So sadly looks like you will be spending lots of money, on your household insurance premium update in the near future.

This is both helpful and unhelpful :) :(

Ouch, this doesn't bode well for my finances :(

Well, just put it down as "LLL"* on the spreadsheet, and necessary for maintaining your mental health.

I must say I am blown away by the quality of images I get from the SL 50 f/2 Apo on the SL2, but am finding it easier to resist the 90mm as I've just spent sooo much money lately on my own LLL.  I expect I'll get one in the end though.

Well, the designer describes the 35 as the best Leica lens ever. So you have that.

But I can't take focal length out of the equation. I'm not a 35mm shooter. So I have the 50 and it's incredible. The 35 may be marginally more incredible. I'll never know. Either lens won't disappoint.

Seriously, here are some questions to consider:

1)   Can you genuinely afford it?  Would you have to forgo anything important if you bought the lens?  Include the costs of annual insurance premium increase as well. If the mature answer is "no", then that is the answer.

2)   Do you want it to take better photographs, or because it is a superb piece of state-of-the-art engineering, or to experiment with?  The last is perfectly reasonable, if you answered "yes" to the first question. If it is the first reason, would you (rather than perfect photographer) genuinely get better photos with it than by cropping the same image from the 75mm lens?

3)   If you do not get one, will you regret it when out taking photographs?  Will you genuinely miss using it and wish you had it in your camera bag?

4)   If you do get one, will you regret the expense, will you take it with you on a trip and use it, and get good photographs?  Will it inspire you to take photographs you would otherwise not take?

David Bailey takes better photos with a Kodak Instamatic than most people do with Hasselblads, Leicas, Nikons, Canons etc. so don't compare yourself with professionals, it is about what you would do with it, and why you want it.

Good luck with your decision.
