I love my 75mm Summicron-SL. My 50mm Summicron-SL too. And my Q2. I love how they all render.

Which is why I now WANT the 90mm Summicron-SL. The justification: for the compressed portrait look I like and the occasional street shots that blur out the background.

Could somebody please convince me that the 75mm can do all those things.

TIA

If you read the forum regularly you should know that GAS is fatal unless treated by the appropriate purchase.

There is no point trying to convince you otherwise.

You will buy it and will be fine till you either suffer severe BUYERS REMORSE as a side effect or survive happily till the next GAS attack.

Check your Credit Card limit

never went away ..... it's just that 95% of my images are with Lumix S1R bodies and 5% with my SL2 (still mostly SL lenses) so I can't really post them on the SL bit of the forum (and the 'Other L Mount section was always a bit of a photo graveyard). I've moaned before about the progressive compartmentalisation of images on LUF.....I'd like to see them send copies of all images posted everywhere to a single constantly updated photo-stream so we can all easily see what everyone is taking. I'm sure a lot of great imagery just gets lost in obscure corners of the forum.

most of my time is spent grumbling in Barnacks Bar ..... a suitable location for grumpy photographers approaching senility and decrepitude. ;)

just for you I've added a few images from the last few weeks (just pre-lockdown).....

Hi,
I'm a residency-enabler in training :P

With the warning out the window I think if you can afford it comfortably you should do it lol! Even though yes it's only a 15m difference but if the new 90mm gets you out shooting even 5% more I think that's a win lol.

To be fair I have a Q2 and also bought the 35SL (even less mm difference) so I may not be the best person to listen to ;)

Happy Shooting!

I had 90mm SL for some time and loved it. Then the focusing ring started to make a noise.Leica store wanted to send it to weltzlar or change with 75mm apo. I choose the change cause i have a 35mm apo and 35-75 may be a better set.
My findings are

90mm is sharper up to f4 especially at close range. It may be as sharp as 35mm apo.
75mm has more natural rendering. It has more of that leica pop magic thet i am used to from M 50mm apo cron.

For your case 90 might be a better choice with 50mm but i would not go for a set of 50-75-90.Buy 90mm and sell 75 wouuld be a smarter move.

By the way how does SL 50mm apo compare to 75mm apo? Is it sharper? Has better rendering like 3d pop?

Thank you for this. It's very helpful. I'd always wanted the 90mm but got a great deal for the 75mm. The compressed look is great for headshots. My goto combo has always been the 28mm and 85mm. I always felt they were a bit too far which is why I also settled for the 75mm. It's a great lens and I agree that it renders more naturally.

The 50mm SL Cron is sharp, renders beautifully, and has great bokeh. Very pleased with it. For portraits, I once tried the 50mm SL Lux. It's big, heavy and flawed but I love how it renders -- possibly better than the Cron at least to my eye.

Some examples I shot:

90mm APO Summicron-SL

Now seriously – if your justification above is really your goal which I understand very well and at the same time you really really need AF, then on the street you need something like the Cron SL 90. I love to do street work with Noctiluxes and I accept the MF challenge even if sometimes focus failure because the cinematic look of the pictures I like the most.

And this IMO is the biggest shortcoming of the Leica SL prime lenses this time. It's even against the Leica philosophy and also marketing of wide open sharpness and blur and glow and all that. On the other hand it's what the M-System provides and the SL with adapters can also do very well.

I have the SL 50 and 90 as well as Noct 50 and 75. When ever I don't really need the AF for people, then I prefer to use the Noctiluxes no matter on the M or SL.

Apart from GAS it's always conflicts of objectives.

But maybe GAS (which I myself definitely have in photography) is the infinite solution of these kinds of conflicts... 😄

What i see is 50mm apo has a bit more leica magic then 75mm. Do you feel the same way?

Of course, put it on a CL/TL2. 😁

If the OP is already shooting with a SL, SL2, or SL2-S then he already has APS-C (or FF) available in-camera at the press of a button so no need to shell out more on a CL/TL2. 🙂

Pete.

True! But I have thought about getting a CL because of the compact form factor.

I've often thought about gettign the 50mm Noctilux but the idea of the very low number of keepers I'd end up hating it. Also, I don't like colour fringing wide open. The cinematic look is attainable I think with the Crons.

A really good thread you have started and I understand GAS dilemmas :) I myself am on my way to leica land again. I have canon r5 and 1d X III which I keep as I use this for my primary tasks. But the new SL2 - S has seriously piqued my interest and I think my first lens should be the SL 35 Cron. What is your view on this lens compared to the 50 Cron SL. If you take the focal length out of the equation. I am thinking especially of the leica look in terms of how it draws?
