gtownby Posted January 17, 2021 Share #1 Posted January 17, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) My 2020 iMac has Lightning and Thunderbolt. My old (but awesome) Nikon 9000 ED has the original FireWire IE 1394 output. (The one that looks like an elongated capital "D"). Any recommendations on cables or hubs to get me scanning film again? (In the meantime, here's a nice scanned color shot - nothing special.) Thanks! Welcome, dear visitor! stray cat Posted January 17, 2021 Share #2 Posted January 17, 2021 That's a very nice scan, Gordon, and I like the picture a lot. I connect my Coolscan 9000 to my iMac with a string of three adapters. I can't remember the various protocols but the adapters daisychained together works perfectly. Good luck with it and please let us see more results.
gtownby Posted January 18, 2021 Author Share #3 Posted January 18, 2021 Thanks, Phil. I'm very motivated to get the scanner up and running again. There's nothing like it available on the market these days.
romualdo Posted January 18, 2021 Share #4 Posted January 18, 2021 (edited) I have a Coolscan 4000 & have been scanning with my Macs for a number of years now Are you using Vuescan as your scanning program - highly recommended IMHO https://www.hamrick.com Firewire 400 To Thunderbolt 3 USB-C On Apple Computers Here's what you need: 1. An Apple Firewire 400 to Firewire 800 adaptor (or a firewire cable with 400 at one end to plug into the scanner and 800 at the other end. 2. Apple Firewire 800 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter. 3. Apple Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 USB-C adaptor. Looks like you'll need all three connectors as your model iMac (2020) will only have Thunderbolt 3 (some call this USB C) connections at back Note: #3 is not necessary if you have Thunderbolt 2 connections on your computer - I only use steps 1 & 2 with my Mac but my son's desktop (more recent model) requires the three Edited January 18, 2021 by romualdo
gtownby Posted January 18, 2021 Author Share #5 Posted January 18, 2021 Thanks, Romualdo. I’m ordering an Elego FW400 to FW800 converter, an Apple FW800 to Thunderbolt converter and then one more Apple Thunderbolt up-converter to Thunderbolt USB-C. Thanks for the confirmation that the whole thing is possible. Yes! I’m a long-time Vuescan user. Good shooting.
