May i ask if you shoot often into the light? I do an a filter is definitely a no no due to reflections for me, i mean when i don't need one for UV/IR filtering or to protect the lens from dust, sand or water. Also, in my modest experience, any filter can produce ghost images when shooting spot sources in dark environments. Now i have always a couple of filters in my bag or a pocket for sake of precaution. Old debate anyway... YMMV.

Yes, often. point sources in dark environments require the filter to be removed which I do. Otherwise its only specific lenses/angles to the sun or other bright sources which very occasionally cause trouble - easily spotted by reviewing and then removing the filter - or if in doubt removing the filter. Its not difficult to remove and replace a filter if deemed necessary.

OP here.  I ordered some Zeiss pre-moistened lens wipes, and a new (sparkling clean) lens pen.  Using a reasonable degree of care, I think this work well.

What do you keep in your bag, or recommend, for cleaning a smug or such off the front element?  Call me crazy, but I'm running my V5 Summicron w/o filter, but with screw-on hood (Heliopan) attached.

I've got a lens pen, but haven't needed it, yet.

High quality medical grade sterile virgin cotton I stole from my dentist 🙂.  I've used it couple times so far, and it works surprisingly well.  They're soft and highly absorbent.
