I have Elmars from 1936 3.5 Nickel to last Elmar-M. It is indeed a superb lens. As Ko.Fe says, not to be confused with small with a filter and hood mounted.

To the OP, if you particularly want the 50's Elmar fine, but the Elmar-M is a better performer and very easy to focus, and should avoid unavoidable age related issues such as haze (that said, I have not read the lens is particularly prone to it, unlike the 'rigid' and collapsable Summicrons).

If you go for Elmar-M, I would suggest a chrome one, as they are brass and  better built (IMHO).

I ended up getting a 50mm summicrom in silver circa  2003 from a well known uk dealer.

I often take my grand kids in the local woods and decided to pay that bit more for the extra stop of light.

I dislike focus tabs which partly attracted me to the elmar but also lead me to the summicrom and will be very interested to see how it differs from my wonderful  zeiss 35mm f1.4 distagon also silver

my other 2 lenses are the zeiss 25mm f2.8 and leica tele-elmarit 90mm f2.8 thin..

In my head i am thinking it will be similar to my minolta 58mm f1.4 but a bit sharper.

Works fine on closeups too. Elmar-M + Leica macro adapter.

Great photo! Did you just use the Leica M Macro Adapter for this? Or is there a specific one for the Elmar lens? Also, do you leave the lens extended or retracted? For some reason when I use the M Macro Adapter with my Summilux 50mm ASPH, it appears much closer than this. This seems like a decent focal range.
