Stars in background!  Can you share ISO, SS and aperture?  It’s remarkable to me to see an exposure with such brightness in the crossing lights (not blown out) while still resolving stars.  Although, I’m almost never away from city lights.

Hello kkcsm

Iso 800, f16 and 1.6 seconds in complete darkness. Try to keep shutter between 1.6 - 3 seconds, this will vary the solidity of train from between translucent and opaque (funny enough this image doesn't have a train). It's all experimental and a process of discovery where each train or scene can be different and each lens can also add some difference. Depending on when you press the shutter, there is a marked difference.

Nothing is clipped however I extend the red halo around the lights by varying the brush size while successively adding a brightening curves.

The sky has been darkened a bit and use Blendif to save highlights and then take off any spillover red light on stars. Finish by adding brightening to stars and change to "screen" blend mode for added zest. Longer exposures of 12-24 seconds to capture the train as a line of light, the aim is to get some at least detail of the train and or details in the stones (ballast) and rails dead sharp. Scene has to be dark, full moon does help but adjust iso down to maintain long exposure and fiddle with aperture. The night lights are brighter than you think so it's okay if you under expose to hide any details you dont want to include. Give it a go, its great when you get something.

Best

Train Art - The SL2S with Apo Summicron M 90 Asph. The Apo M 90 does a supreme job with these slomo train flash images, as does the 90-280. This is a freight train heading east across Australia. Captured at 19:30 hrs at a place called Baandee, about 200kms east of Perth, population 12.
