Travis Hill Posted December 10, 2020 Share #1 Posted December 10, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm a bit perplexed. My 50mm Summar lens was back focusing at it's closest distance. I adjusted the rangefinder lever (following the video below) and now it's perfect at close distances but out at mid distances. Not exactly sure why this would be? I'm guessing I need to find the sweet spot between close and mid distances that gives the best possible results for both near and far. Any advice would be truly appreciated! Jeff S Posted December 10, 2020 Share #2 Posted December 10, 2020 If the issue is clearly the camera’s calibration and not just the lens, these often cited diagrams and commentary by Julian Thompson may help with some basic RF adjustment principles and techniques: Jeff
Travis Hill Posted December 10, 2020 Author Share #3 Posted December 10, 2020 Fantastic. Thanks Jeff! I'll give that a read. I recently had my m8 (body only) serviced by Leica and now my Summar seems to be back focusing. My 35mm seems to be fine though. I've never had a problem with my Summar before so hopefully I can sort this one out without having to send it back to Germany.

If your M has live view, and you have multiple lenses, you can better assess whether the issue lies with the lens or the camera. (Leica adjusts them independently.) This requires careful tripod/target setup, comparing LV vs RF focus. EDIT... sorry, missed the obvious M8 post Jeff Edited December 10, 2020 by Jeff S
jaapv Posted December 10, 2020 Share #5 Posted December 10, 2020 The best thing you can do is to send your camera and lenses to a trusted repair shop and have the whole system calibrated - it is clear that there are too many parameters involved to do this in DIY. BTW, the adjustment you made is for infinity, not close distance. the close distance is the screw on the pivot of the arm.
Travis Hill Posted December 10, 2020 Author Share #6 Posted December 10, 2020 Oh crap. I think you are right Jaapv. I'll try and find a professional to fix it. I can see myself getting into all sorts of trouble with this. Jeff, I had a read of the link, definitely some interesting info. Thanks guys!
