harmen Posted December 8, 2020 Share #1 Posted December 8, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) Curious whether the Q2M could make a dent in infrared, I tried it out with a Hoya R72 (720nm) filter. All the shots here are 4 seconds, at ISO 12500, with varying, but fairly open aperture. The photos have a hot spot in the middle - countered with vignetting in post. It's certainly not ready for action photography, but I could see myself trying it again with a more suitable landscape. Weather was overcast, but fairly bright. Welcome, dear visitor! nwphil Posted December 8, 2020 Share #4 Posted December 8, 2020 Hmmm... not an expert but used a full spectrum Canon 40D, a M8 with filters (not converted just in b&w mode) and your shots don't have the IR tonality. I have seen in mine and many others A+ for the effort but the results in my view are an F Too bad, because would be nice indeed
harmen Posted December 8, 2020 Author Share #5 Posted December 8, 2020 Good summary. I also see barely any IR effect. Still waiting to try it on foliage in front of a brick house in the full sun to make sure 😉
ianforber Posted December 8, 2020 Share #6 Posted December 8, 2020 Worth trying with a more extreme filter? This is what I get with the normal Q2 and a B+W 093 filter (ie 850nm) Welcome, dear visitor! harmen Posted December 8, 2020 Author Share #7 Posted December 8, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) Beautiful! Looks like it’s worth a try; not a filter I have though. Hoping someone else does...
nwphil Posted December 8, 2020 Share #8 Posted December 8, 2020 foggy day ...darn. I have a small bunch lf IR filters, not the right diameter, but I will figure out a way to shoot with them. The hotspot it's a lens thing, and no filter or pp will fix that. fingers crossed @ianforber nice!!!!! thanks for sharing
Stephen.s1 Posted December 8, 2020 Share #9 Posted December 8, 2020 re: hotspot. You've probably got it covered.. but is your exposure metering inadvertently set on spot?

Thanks for sharing - if this is SOOC (no channel editing), it's indeed very promising for the Q2M. It will not be me discussing a talking about the M8 sensor in any technical way, but accounting that had a weak? uv filter ( or was no uv filter at all in the sensor) and just slapping an IR filter in B&W film mode was enough to get very close, I am not looking forward to test it myself....or see someone's else results - the forecast is for wet all week

Can't tell for sure if there is a hotspot or not, as just viewed the shots in the lcd for now. more later.... I always shoot DNG but, from memory and without firing up the laptop to check, I think I did a basic raw conversion in Capture One, converted to B&W then sent to SFX Pro and applied one of the presets. No doubt SFX Pro did some channel mixing magic in the background! I’ll check tomorrow and report back
boycott_seattle Posted September 29, 2021 Share #13 Posted September 29, 2021 This is the only thread I've found online about the B+W Infrared filter with the Q2M. Anyone have any more samples of infrared with this filter on the Q2M?
Nimar Posted January 23, 2023 Share #14 Posted January 23, 2023 (edited) Seems the Q2M / Q2 may handle things differently. Have tried a B+W 92 and there is strong central hot spotting. Not very familiar with the phenomenon, and haven’t had enough time / bright sun recently to experiment further. I also tried with a 093 filter and it appeared that I couldn’t capture anything but perhaps that was user error. The 092 is essentially very dark red verging on IR but does allow visible light. The 093 allows zero visible light. edit. Just tried the 093 again and it does work and no hot spotting but requires a lot of light eg. 15s / 1600iso / f1.7. Rough estimation was 18 stops of extra light Edited January 23, 2023 by Nimar
