LTM - M adaptor: Leave on camera?

Hi,

I'm in the process of buying an M2 body to augment my IIIF. Since all of my lenses are thread mount, I will have to use the adaptor. I was wondering if it did any harm to simply leave the adaptor on the camera and simply remove the lens by unscrewing it?

Thanks

Ken

Won't do any harm at all, just bear in mind you need the relevant adaptor to bring up the correct frame lines in the viewfinder (35, 50 or 90) and you'd need a screw fit body cap for it.

By the way I have also recently bought an M2 to use alongside my lllf, I use the M2 with a 35mm lens most of the time and my Skopar 25 or 5cm Elmar on the lllf.

No problem, I think, provided that You do not force too much the screwing in of the lenses, to avoid stress on the BM when you unscrew; of course, there is the problem of the correct frames that, in the finder, are activated by the adapters themselves (that is the reason for Leitz manufactured 3 distinct adapters): if you decide, say, to keep "fixed" the 35 mm adapter and screw in a 50 mm lens, you have not the correct frame and have to act on the manual lever to evaluate framing (it can be annoying in dynamic situations).

Personally, I had a similar situation years and years ago (IIIc to M4) and at the end I preferred to follow the inverse way: my favorite lenses kept always the proper adapter and used them as the were BM.

Enjoy your M2 ! Is a fine workhorse !

Yeah, I'm aware of the frameline issue. I bought a 35mm adaptor and I plan to use it with my CV 35/2.5. I was assuming that I could use the frameline selector if I wanted to mount my 50 or my 90. I might just leave the adaptor on the lens and dedicate the M2 to the 35 as James is doing. Either way, I'm looking forward to the addition! Thanks for your answers.

Ken, snap, I'm also using the VC 35 2.5, its an excellent lens and overall makes for a neat package with the M2.

You could of course use the frame lever with other lenses if you are only going to use them occassionally, but there is a risk of forgetting if shooting something in a hurry.

I bought a full set of adaptors from a seller on e bay - not Leica but they are fine. One day I might try the 50mm on it!
