Like most large cities, my city has a serious homeless problem that continues to get worse. Along with it comes litter. When the people in these makeshift tents move along, they will undoubtedly leave all the trash you see here behind. It's gotten so bad that when my wife and I walk this route along the river, we carry large trash bags which we fill up every time.

Our homeless problem is sad, Brent. We should (indicting myself) do more for these folks. Both sides of the political spectrum have failed.

I agree, Dustin. A lot of this is mental health problems. The movement in this country has been to get people out of institutions but in many cases these folks don't know how to care for themselves or find work. It's a true dilemma. I have no idea what the answer is. For those who are homeless purely due to financial reasons, we need to do more as a society to prevent them from having to live on the streets.

My first thought on seeing this is the severity of your winters, and wondering how they will cope..

I think many don't cope. They die from exposure, their bodies are carted away and we never hear about it. I've seen people sleeping on benches in sub zero weather with coats, blankets and sleeping bags piled on top of them. That might be fine for sleeping, but during the day there are limited places for them to get warm. A lot go to the public library and to our civic center. It's a serious problem and just keeps getting worse.

I am not sure which is worse, the homeless problem or the littering problem.  I also take a garbage bag with me when I go to the desert.  So many pieces of plastic caught in the plants...

I have to agree with everyone here.  The homeless crisis is very poor in Florida.  It seems to be getting worse and growing larger.  To see these poor people on the streets covered in paper or anything they can find is just heartbreaking.  I just don't have answers to stop it.

I walked past the camp on the other side of the river yesterday and was pleased to see that some new occupants have cleaned up the area. I'm not pleased that there are new occupants, but I am happy to see that the area is now litter free.
