Does anyone know if the current Leica e67 cap 16045 is a direct replacement for the original recommended cap 14291 for the 21-35 Vario Elmar R? It would be good if it is, as the original 14291 has release tabs on the rim, which makes it close to impossible to remove when a hood is fitted, especially with inflexible clumsy fingers like mine. The current e67 cap has the far more sensible release tabs on the front face.

I soon learnt never to try and fit the cap with the hood in position - easy enough to do but a devil of a job to get it off again! When not in immediate use I fit the hood back-to-front, then the cap.  It only takes a couple of seconds to whip the cap off and reorientate the hood.

Wilson, excellent idea - using the 16045 cap never even crossed my mind! When I very first acquired my 21-35, I always simply kept the hood on in its inverted position, and then the 14291 cap that came with it, taking off the cap and attaching the hood before use, and leaving it in the "in use" position until I had finished.

That got overtaken by events though, because I am one of those people that prefer to use a protective filter. To try to minimise vignetting at the wide (21) end, I bought one of the "slimline" B+W E67 filters. These come with their own "push-on" type of cover cap. (Being slimline, the filter  has no internal threads on the side of the filter external to the camera with which the cap clips engage, so a clip-on hood won't mount anyway.) Trouble is also that the push-on cap is easily knocked off. You can put the push-on cap on the lens with the hood in the "in use" position, but to get it off, you have to remove the hood so that it takes the cap with it. Not ideal.

I have found there is yet another Leica e67 lens cap, the 14031. Leica don't half overcomplicate things. This is OEM on the 11-23mm TL lens, which I have for using on my digital CL. This fits just fine on the 21-35 but I see it is £2 more from Leica than the 16045. If the 14031 fits, I see no reason the 16045 wouldn't.

Yes John, it arrived this morning even though the DHL tracking from Germany insists it is still in Dorsten. Just for luck I tried tracking it on DHL UK, who said it was due for delivery in about 10 minutes ..... and it was. It comes with a somewhat scratched 67mm Leica UV/IR filter, that I am guessing has been on from new as the lens is wholly unmarked underneath, although quite dirty. It took 2 Zeiss impregnated tissues before I got all the greasy smears off it. I might get a less "loved" UV filter, although when I took the lens cap off my 11-23 lens, I found a slimline B+W Käsemann circular polariser underneath, which is probably what I will use when the lens is mounted on my M10-R, as at present. The supplied fron lens cap was a non-Leica item with very weak plastic springs on the clips and comes off with a gentle shake.

Wilson, Congratulations on your 21-35mm, truly a wonderful lens.

Whenever I'am out I never take the Leica caps, leave them home or in bag, just use cheaper ones or go without, lens hood offer some protection.

Good luck on the 21-35mm, a shot taken some years ago in France with the Canon 600D, I find the lens to be very sharp, you should get much better images from your M10-R

Ken.

The 16045 lens cap arrived from Wetzlar this morning, in a box big enough to hold an M camera. It fits just fine on the 21-35 V-E-R lens, as you can see below. It also fits fine on my TL 11-23 lens, which comes supplied with a different e67 cap, the 14031. Why Leica seem to make 2 different but interchangeable 67mm lens caps with front releases and yet another one, the 14291 cap with rim releases, totally escapes me. Officially the 16045 is for the SL-75 and SL-90 lenses. The cost of making injection moulds for three caps cannot have been small, which might go some way to explaining why Leica charges so much for them.
