Hi everyone, I've been lurking and learning here for a while. I recently bought an MP to go with my M/A and took it to Sedona on a recent holiday. I'm in the process of developing & scanning the rolls of film I shot there and I have a nasty feeling I may have burnt a hole in my shutter curtain. however, I'm not sure because:

1. I can't see any hole on close inspection under direct light (even with a magnifying glass)

2. Only a very few shots are affected, showing a flare-type spot in the lower left corner of the frames that are affected

3. The spot is not in the same place and moves around (although always lower left corner area)

4. I only see the spot/flare when the sun is at an acute angle just out of frame, either on the right or left side

5. I only see it on photos taken with my Elmarit 28mm f2.8

I've inspected the lens closely too and cannot see any obvious signs of imperfection, so I'm pretty stumped. It does have a B&W UV filter on it so I'm wondering if somehow light bounces around when it gets at an acute angle to the sun?

paddycook, I had a hole in the curtain of my M6--it will leave a kind of accurate trail on your film. Or a distinct fleck. Not such a "floater" like thing in varying places. So I have the suspicion it´s the lens... Since You have a second film body : try it on the other body and see what happens. If its the lens: get it checked. Good luck !

btw: a new curtain is really expensive. So may be a lens problem can be solved more cheaply...

Hello Paddycook,

Welcome to the Forum.

Did you look both with the shutter cocked & with the shutter run down? The arrangement of shutter curtains is different wound up & run down.

IF your problem is a hole thru the curtains it may NOT be necessary to replace them.

Back in the last Century this happened to me. Leitz repaired the curtains with some sort of goppish material. Esthetically challenged. None-the-less the curtains are still operationally perfectly fine today.

Best Regards,

Michael

This seems like a smoking gun. If the ghost only appears when this lens is used and never with any other lens then, surely if it has to be the lens.

If it is a Pinhole take the lens off, open the back and in a darkened room hold your eye up close to the back and shine a bright led torch in the lens opening, try to avoid the light escaping round the lens mount. Once your eye has got used to the dark you should be able to see a tiny Pinhole of light from one curtain or the other.

Remembering exactly where the hole is once you switch the lights back on can be tricky but then you can put a small spot of matt  black paint over the hole, I use blackboard paint. I did try liquid electrical tape but it dries too quickly and is too thick to apply tiny amounts.

On the other hand, if it’s always diagonally opposite the sun in the pictures and in different places in the frame it may be a flare spot produced by the lens. A Pinhole will always be in the same place and just depends on how long the blind with the hole was left exposed to the light, ie if the camera was left with the shutter wound on or not in the light.

ooops! I quoted the wrong post above...based upon the shadows, this one also appears to have sun on the left.
