@Dennis now that I understand the differences. I think TT artisans is probably a better fit.

Not intending to derail the thread... But I only discovered a ”new” company in China called ”Light Lens Lab”, they have started developing prototypes/small batches ”replica” 8 element sunmicron 35/2.. I guess the patents have expired https://quanj.tistory.com/832 ( in Korean, but there is an excerpt from a magazine article near the end)  so ill keep my eye on that.

Never heard about it... Who knows 🤷‍♂️

The best option is to try many options and decide for the best according to needs and budget. I decided for the TT w/o trying, but I'm a special case 😜

Thanks @Dennis for starting this thread. I was researching the differences and basically it came down to cost (AUD $525).

I currently have the Summilux 35mm pre-asph (Canada), lots of "personality"..  but at times I want something that is abit more "modern" in it's rendering..  without spending more than I need to.. so the lens look like it will fit the bill... yes G.A.S was involved..

Glad it helped. Check also here:

Then, you can let us know how it feels like to shoot with.

About the 35 Leica renderings, no clues. Never tried one. But I can imagine it has a better optical performance than a TT regarding flare, CA, Croma and stuffs like that. But the rendering and sharpening of some older versions, maybe, it's what still makes me think about why spend so much on a lens. My ZM 35/2.8 is a stellar performer, for less than $1,000. And some are saying that is better than others Leica 35's for this and that ... Who knows ... I'm still in the learning, experimenting, and embracing stage 😬

So far, for my favorite FL, I have two! And I love it

I've also bought this lens. Focus tab is a bit sticky at first but once you're used to it it's kinda ok. Mine backed focus out of the box but I got their authorised retailer to adjust it for me and it's been spot on! I think the rendering isn't up to par with the "modern" standard, and bokeh balls swirl like crazy sometimes, but other times it gives very smooth OOF rendition which I very much like, especially at F1.4

If I hadn't fallen in love with Leica's Summilux 50 ASPH, I would have probably shot with it more. It hasn't been out of the dry cabinet for months now 😅  Probably will once I tire of carrying both the Q2 and M10-P around with me 😆

I also had to adjust mine (slight front focus) and since I bought over the internet it was the easiest to adjust myself. With a tripod it took around 20 Minutes and now it is spot on. If my rangefinder becomes less exact with time, I can simply readjust any day.

It depends on expectation, whether you like this lens or not. My goal was to have 90% of the Summilux pre-FLE I owned previously at 20% of the price. This lens perfectly fits my taste as it offers a good mix of modern and classic rendering and is sharper, than classic lenses. And if I ditch it, my bank account will not implode.

Hello, I noticed some quirks of the lens in bright sunlight. At certain special angles I‘m getting a super ugly flare with potential of ruining the picture. This happens at 1.4 to 2. Does somebody have similar experiences? And if yes, how did you solve it?

Yes. I have had similar experiences. I cured by remembering what my mother told me 60 years ago. Don’t shoot the camera towards the sun. She said if I did I deserved the results.

Haha, some people learn from their own mistakes :) The example is admittedly extreme, but I also had this when having the sun or a bright light source just slightly outside of the frame. If the light source is in the frame, this strangely doesn’t happen.

I look forward to checking this out when my lens (finally arrives.. still waiting). Looks like a known attribute that it doesn’t handle flaring very well (Philip’s review).

But to be “fair” if you google “Leica flare” you will see.. a whole lot of “controversy”.

But... i do wonder if the characteristics of the TT 35mm 1.4 flare could be used for artistic purposes.. sounds like a challenge when I get it 😂

Here is a more moderate example to show, what I meant. The sun is slightly out of the frame on the right side. The flare is only in the upper right corner. Not really something I would want to use for artistic purposes. This is annoying as otherwise I do not really miss my Summilux pre-FLE. The TTA is really good.

Since I did not hold the lens into the sun, it looks like some kind of inner reflections. Maybe some shiny plastic noticed by Harpomatic with his 50mm in an another thread. Just to add: if I hold the lens into the sun, there is no flare whatsoever, just not so much contrast.

Damn the reflections. Full speed ahead.

Has somebody been able to solve it to some extent? Maybe some 3rd party hood suggestions?

I didn't try the lens yet in those conditions, but I will. But I guess it's one cons of this lens. It can be so great at that price, it has to have a weakness (apart than the weight).

Can I ask what size screwdriver/type you used? My copy didn't come with one and I'm trying my hardest to determine how to calibrate. Looks like the cams use a slotted screwdriver?

It was a slotted flat blade screwdriver, about 1mm wide. Those are also normally a part of precision mechanics screwdriver sets.
