dpattinson Posted August 20, 2007 Share #1 Posted August 20, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a second-hand 50/1.4 asph which is backfocussing quite noticably on my M8. It seems to be at least a foot out at around 4m (at 1.4 - so it's not foucus shift afaik). It's not coded, so I'm wondering is it better to send it in for coding and get the focus checked at the same time, or try to get the focus fixed here in London. Any advice at to how to go about this in London, and the likely cost/time for a visit to solms would be much appreciated. Thanks, David.

Hi David sounds like the best bet is to get it coded and mention it on the letter - I'm pretty sure that they will check the focusing when they put on the new 6 bit mount. FWIW my 1990 21 mm elmarit needed some serious work done on it when it went back, and the whole thing cost £175 (including coding). It's now a stellar performer. Let's face it, you're likely to want it coded in the end anyway.
gabriel Posted August 20, 2007 Share #3 Posted August 20, 2007 Talk to Leica Milton Keynes in the first instance as there many lenses that they can code on the spot while you wait by appointment, as to whether they can reciify your backfocus problem without going back to solms you will have to ask them. Leica UK are as far as I know are the only place that does the coding (or has it done in Solms), all dealers go via them. Current Solms turnaround for coding from my experience seems to be about 5 weeks Leica UK charge £75 (incl VAT) for coding any lens irrespective of whether they do the work or it goes back to Solms inclusive of all carriage charges. How much you will be charged to fix the backfocus problem ask them.
marknorton Posted August 20, 2007 Share #4 Posted August 20, 2007 AFAIK, Leica MK will not touch any ASPH lenses and the 50/1.4 has one of the most complex mounts of any M lens because of the floating elements. So I'd send it back to Solms directly which will minimise any handling delays in MK.
wlaidlaw Posted August 20, 2007 Share #5 Posted August 20, 2007 I would recommend either Solms or talk to Malcolm Taylor (PM me for contact details if interested). There is a firm in South London who advertise services for Leica and Zeiss lenses. I personally had very poor experience of them with a Zeiss Vario Sonnar 28-85, sent to them for service by Hailsham Camera. They seriously damaged the lens, scratching the front element and then denied it. MT sorted it all out for me. Wilson

marknorton Posted August 20, 2007 Share #7 Posted August 20, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Someone else reported there are 3 lenses they will not code, MATE, APO 90/2 ASPH and one other, I do not know which one. My comment about ASPH lenses referred to the focussing adjustment.

My comment about ASPH lenses referred to the focussing adjustment. Every time I ask they tell me they are unable to code my Noctilux, 35 ASPH Summilux or 75mm Summilux. All will have to go to Solms at some time with the inevitable delays. I know for sure they are unable to code the MATE at MK. Bob.
wlaidlaw Posted August 20, 2007 Share #9 Posted August 20, 2007 BTW has anyone had a 90/2.8 Elmarit-M coded at MK? After the previous disaster with that lens, I am reluctant to send to Solms for them to try coding it again. Wilson

wlaidlaw Posted August 20, 2007 Share #11 Posted August 20, 2007 HI WillNo - Mine had to be sent back to Solms (no disaster though) It might be nice if MK were able to give us a list of the lenses they WERE able to code. Would save them phone calls and clarify the position to their customers. As Leica UK have their own website, it could go in the FAQ section. Andy (Barton) - you know them well - could you suggest it to them please. Wilson
jedi996sps Posted August 20, 2007 Share #12 Posted August 20, 2007 Hi David, I hav same lense (brand new) which was also backfocusing so i dropped off camera and lense at MK...been 2 weeks so hopefully i will get it back soon. I hav asked for a report advising what adjustments (camera or lense or both) have been made. Depending on how long u can b without lense and possibly camera will probably dictate which route u should follow....but would be a shame to send lense, get that back, only to discover that problem is within camera (possibly??), which is why i opted to send both at same time. Good luck Ali

Wilson Hi Wilson I did suggest it to them, but the argument was that there are so many different versions of each lens, and that publishing a list made it even more confusing. Still, you can ring Dave Humphries - he's friendly, helpful and knowledgeable, and he nearly always answers the phone quickly: 01908 256 400.
