Youtube Interview lamenting simpler times "Two Leicas, two lenses and a bag of Tri-X ... no idea how good that was , how fantastic that was"

I think he does bring the point across well , that the modern world expects content creators and is not going to support pure photojournalistic endeavors.

The one man band ; videographer, sound recordist, drone pilot, researcher, script writer, editor, accountant, presenter and photographer ; is going to be a less focused photographer.

Unfortunately I can only take about 5 minutes max of Dan Milnor and that video was 12 minutes long.

I see what you mean. I didn't want to risk the 12 minute video but watched the Trinity one and it was pretty vapid stuff.

I must have tried to watch the wrong YouTube  video. He kept waving a camera and notebook around but I’m unsure of what it was he was trying to say.

If he was on about stuff cluttering up his life, I can’t take him seriously whilst he’s wearing sunglasses and a parka.

Yet another YouTube fail.

You should see what he uses when he travels light.

Jeez

That amount of stuff is enough to suck the enjoyment out of any travel.

There is a later video where he says , that set up was completely wrong , with consistency out the window ; mixing color, B&W, digital, film, polaroids and square was a disaster.

A four year old could have told him that...

Still, he's got 10,000s of views on YT and some company pays him a couple of pennies every time someone looks at his videos. At the end of the day, that's what it's all about. Clicks.

Why is he wearing sunglasses inside?

Because he doesn't want to be dazzled by his own reflection.

Photography was truly simpler when the photographer wasn't the story, it was all dealt with in a retrospective after the photographer had a life to look back on regarding what he meant or didn't mean, and how he worked, instead of what he did to promote himself on YouTube.

The personality of the presenter has been a common theme throughout entertainment and news media over the years. The difference here is that what was once a fairly closed-door and esoteric activity has become part of this media. And in a world where technology has enabled anyone with a camera to call themselves a photographer, self promotion through online infotainment has become a powerful tool.

Camera brands recognize this, giving ambassadorships to photographers with enough professional and social credibility to promote the brand. Look at all the Lumix Luminaries, Canon Lightscribers (what are they called?) and even Leica ambassadors. And yet, this is not new, just taken to another level. Prominent photographers endorsed cameras and brands back from at least the 60s and 70s.

I don't begrudge nor judge Daniel or anyone else who has created YouTube channels for their work. As long as their content is interesting and useful, it helps photography. I learn things from YouTube photography channels all the time.

I don't want You Tube nor be apart of it, nor Instagram....nor even FB anymore. One reason why I like 'film' is that it allows me to pull away from the self-reliance behavior that comes with too much technology. I too don't begrudge anyone for doing it.... just not me anymore.

That guy has too much crap.....

Pretty interesting and perhaps, profound insight. Thanks.

I got to about the third iteration of his gear and walked away - nauseated by how full of himself he is. There’s maybe thirty seconds of thoughtful information and eleven minutes him glorifying himself.

I do not shoot film very often anymore, but, I am always looking for that perfect small kit in a digital way.

1 camera 1 lens would be, for me, Leica M9M / Voigt 50mm f1.2

2 camera 2 lens would be, for me, Leica M9M / M9  Voigtlander 21mm/50mm

I think it is extremely hard to compact your kit into making sacrifices. I currently own M9M, M9, Voigtlander 21/35/50/75 and leica 90. I can squeeze it into a Billingham and the batteries are the same.

If I could pick from anything in the world it would be M10R / Noctilux 0.95
