fotografr Posted October 5, 2020 Share #1 Posted October 5, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just took a fall trip to my cabin in the Upper Peninsula and shot a bit of color with the DLux 7. In order to post a large selection together here, I dropped the size to 1200 pixels and used the quality setting of 0 when saving for web, so the images aren't going to look their best. About 40 years ago my wife and I bought 80 acres for a mere $12,000 and built the small cabin by hand. It was one of the best investments we ever made, not only in terms of dollars. The first shot shows the access road where you first come onto our property. The second is my self-portrait (tripod) after getting unpacked and settled in. This was a solo trip since my wife was unable to clear her schedule. The next shots show the cabin and the way it is situated high on a bluff overlooking a valley. The night interior isn't very good quality because I shot it without a tripod from the sleeping loft and had to use ISO 1600. The following four shots were taken as I walked the perimeter of the land looking for a bit of color. The final shot is the Sturgeon River with water stained brown by the high iron concentration in rocks it flows through. One corner of our land butts up against the river right where I shot this photo. Up until a few years ago, this was a huge backwater lake formed by a power dam and it was one of the most beautiful places I've ever canoed. Then the dam was taken down because the power company didn't want to maintain it any more. The backwater lake drained and the Sturgeon was reverted to a free flowing river. I wasn't happy about that initially, but when I see the river now in its natural state I have to agree this was the correct thing to do. Welcome, dear visitor! wda Posted October 5, 2020 Share #2 Posted October 5, 2020 A very interesting story. Thank you for sharing. What was the state and purpose of the land before you bought your plot?

What was the state and purpose of the land before you bought your plot? Thanks much. The land was quite pristine when we bought it. The people we purchased from had inherited it from their parents and only used it for occasional deer hunting. We first viewed it in the middle of winter when snow there was waist deep and we fell in love with it immediately. There had been no logging on it for over 75 years so there were, and still are, many huge trees. It's heavily wooded and none of the land is tillable. A high rock bluff cuts across the property so the place where we built the cabin is about 200 ft higher than the lower area. Because of that, we were unable to perc, which means we have to haul our water in by hand. We also have no electricity, but have never missed it there. Literally, the only change we've made to the property in 40 years is to build the cabin. Our purpose is to have it remain that way. stuny Posted October 6, 2020 Share #4 Posted October 6, 2020 A lovely set, story, setting and cabin. My favorite shot is the self portrait. A long drop or chemical toilet?

A long drop or chemical toilet? The best way to answer your question is with another photo. We looked into a chemical toilet way back in the beginning but quickly learned that for decomposition to occur a small amount of heat is required, such as from a single incandescent light. Since we have no electricity at the cabin, we weren't able to go that route. Our "long drop" is pretty fancy and comfortable, however. Welcome, dear visitor!
