jtharvie Posted August 19, 2007 Share #1 Posted August 19, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I was out on the Prairie, West side of Lake Manitoba and came across these tiny yellow flowers. They grow just an inch from the ground and are the size of my pinkie fingernail. Once I got them on the screen, they look like orchids. Anyone know what these are? stuny Posted August 19, 2007 Share #2 Posted August 19, 2007 John - They probably are orchids. I've seen similar ones this size in a similar climate in the southern hemisphere.
Artichoke Posted August 20, 2007 Share #3 Posted August 20, 2007 but I do not think they are orchids common to all orchids is a central column, which while not always prominent, does not appear to be present in the flowers you photographed I could be wrong of course, but without a column, this is not an orchid it looks more a legume, possibly Birdsfoot Trefoil, which grows close to the ground and is a member of the pea family ...it is also known as Lotus corniculatus here is a photograph from Andy's Northern Ontario Wildflower site Andy's northern Ontario alien wildflowers - waste areas - Part 2 according to this source, this plant is native to Europe and was introduced into the Canadian wild where it flourishes
jtharvie Posted August 20, 2007 Author Share #4 Posted August 20, 2007 Thanks Stu & Arthur. I think you're spot on Arthur. I've a couple of other shots and they resemble the photo you provided from Andy's. Cheers jth
cbretteville Posted August 20, 2007 Share #5 Posted August 20, 2007 Nice shots. They grow all over the southern Norwegian coast. Very much a summer flower, we have orchids native to our flora, but this isn't one. - Carl
