lct Posted September 22, 2020 Share #1 Posted September 22, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) Couple of boring snaps with the CV Nokton 35/1.4 SC v2 on digital CL (all at f/1.4). "SC" for single coated that i preferred to the "MC" (multicoated) version. As far as sharpness is concerned the Nokton has less acutance than the Summilux 35/1.4 FLE, somewhat expectedly, but it is almost half shorter than the later and is not a soft lens at all. Compared to the Summilux-M 35/1.4 v2 it can focus at 0.7m instead of 1m, it is much sharper at f/1.4 with more contrast and color saturation but it also has more distortion and no significant glow (halos around highlights). Compared to the Nokton 35/1.4 SC v1, it looks significantly sharper too with more contract and more saturated colors. Also the Nokton SC v2 flares much less than both Summilux v2 and Nokton SC v1. It tends to produce ghost images when strong light sources are inside the frame but shows just a bit of veiling flare when same light sources are outside the frame. Distortion is not insignificant but looks well corrected on the CL through the "35 f/1.4 ASPH. 11873" lens profile i.e. that of the "double aspherical" Summilux 35. I did not try other lens profiles but that of the Summilux-M 35/1.4 pre-asph doesn't correct for distortion at all so i would not advise it for this lens. Bokeh is not harsh but looks rather busy on contrasty backgrounds. Less so than the "MC" version of the lens though, reason why i chose the "SC". CA is not absent but very discrete to the point that i didn't feel the need to adjust it in PP. The lens is said to show some coma too but i did not notice it much on the CL, due to the crop factor i suspect. I didn't see any focus shift either but i did not try the lens on my Ms. All in all, a true compact lens (29mm x 55mm, 190 gr), nicely made, with classic focus tab, butter smooth focusing, nice and sturdy hood, perfect match with the CL size wise. Matches well another favorite of mine the ZM Sonnar 50/1.5 too. Pity that Leica doesn't make fast lenses that compact anymore but i still use my Summilux-M 35/1.4 v2 with pleasure for its unique glow. FWIW. norm_snyder Posted September 22, 2020 Share #2 Posted September 22, 2020 Thank you for this, LCT. I’ve been considering this lens for my CL, in part because I can use the additional f-stop over the 35mm v4 Summicron I’ve been using since some time in the 80s. I had considered the C-V 35mm f1.2, either v2 or v3, but used to own the v1 version to use on an M9, and eventually got rid of it, due to the additional size and weight, not to mention that it’s only a half stop faster. I thought the crop factor might take care of the concerns about corner sharpness and give me a fast “normal” for the CL.
lct Posted September 22, 2020 Author Share #3 Posted September 22, 2020 You're welcome. I have no experience with either version of the CV 35/1.2 as i prefer small lenses but the Summicron 35/2 v4 is even shorter than the CV 35/1.4 and works well on the CL too. norm_snyder Posted September 22, 2020 Share #4 Posted September 22, 2020 I love the 35 f2 v4 size, not to mention the way it images, and that's why I've stuck with it through various film and digital bodies. But then, I'm a sucker for Mändler designed lenses. While I have a couple of newer, Karbe designed lenses, it's those lenses from the 60s and 70s to which I keep returning. I'm sorry I never bought a 35mm f1.4 Summilux pre-ASPH when they were cheap[er].
lct Posted September 24, 2020 Author Share #5 Posted September 24, 2020 Bit of glow here. This lens could well be a modern Summilux pre-asph after all.
