AGeoJO Posted August 18, 2007 Share #1 Posted August 18, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, my affair with the Leica M RF system is fairly short although I used a Contax G RF system (2 bodies and 5 lenses) during its heyday. I started buying M lenses (used but in mint condition) in August almost a year ago. Prior to the availability of the M8, I used the lenses on an M6 and later on on an Epson R-D1. I didn't notice any back or front focusing issues on any of the lenses, including the Nocti. After I got my M8 in November last year, I bought two new lenses, adding to my lens lineup. Six Leica and a CV15, all lenses are right on the money in term of focusing. In the last few weeks, I noticed that people reported or have been increasingly reporting focusing issues with their lenses. Especially the Nocti, seems to have established a notorious reputation in that respect. People use it at wide open or close to wide open and understandably so. As of earlier this year, I didn't know that M lenses can back or front focus . I thought that that problem, at least the majority of the problems, was limited to the AF world of (D)SLRs; silly me . Yes, I am counting my blessing alright but.... am I just lucky or do other people share my experience of not having focusing issues?

fotografr Posted August 18, 2007 Share #2 Posted August 18, 2007 My experience is the same as yours. I have 8 M lenses, including the noctilux, and have had no M8 focusing issues with any of them.
Guest guy_mancuso Posted August 18, 2007 Share #3 Posted August 18, 2007 I have had very few overall , i did send back my 50 and 135 and one M8 to fine tune but really nothing major or I could not adjust myself which i have done. To me this is minor , I had as well as Brent had our nightmares already 3 times for him and twice for me and that stuff is all gone and i'm really one happy freaking camper when i look at the files everyday from my shoots. To me the image counts and how I get there or whatever trick or hassle I had to do is worth it. It's not easy shooting ALL your commercial work with a RF camera but the extra work for me is worth it and i have yet to grab a DSLR to save my bacon
Tony C. Posted August 18, 2007 Share #4 Posted August 18, 2007 I have used the following lenses on my M8 with no focussing issues to speak of: 75mm 'cron, Noctilux, 35mm 'lux, 28mm 'cron, Zeiss 21mm Biogon, and CV 15mm Having said that, I did follow the wise advice of a fellow forum member early on, and adjusted my M8 to infinity, and I'm quite convinced that this simple adjustment played an important role in my "good luck"! larry Posted August 18, 2007 Share #5 Posted August 18, 2007 I have four lenses and they're all dead-on. Of course, this is impossible with this horribly flawed camera, so it must be that my eyes are front- or back-focusing. ;-) Larry
hdrmd Posted August 18, 2007 Share #6 Posted August 18, 2007 So far, so good, with the exception of a small adjustment for the 75mm f 1.4. DR
garygsandhu Posted August 18, 2007 Share #7 Posted August 18, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Cosina 21and 28; Summicron 35,50,90, summilux 35, elmarit 90, and elmar 50 focus fine.
Kent10D Posted August 18, 2007 Share #8 Posted August 18, 2007 So far, so good, with the exception of a small adjustment for the 75mm f 1.4. DR Similar experience here. I had to tweak my rangefinder a bit to bring my 75 lux into line because it was so critical, but doing that hasn't taken any of my other lenses out of their acceptable range, so I'm happy for the time being. carstenw Posted August 18, 2007 Share #9 Posted August 18, 2007 CV15, WATE, 28/2, 35/2A ,35/1.4A, 50/1.4A, 75/1.4, 90/4, 135/2.8. All were dead on, except the 50/1.4A which needed adjusting twice.
Guest guy_mancuso Posted August 18, 2007 Share #10 Posted August 18, 2007 Carsten you really built up a nice pallette of glass in a pretty short time. Good for you My 50 needed a shim otherwise all good
carstenw Posted August 18, 2007 Share #11 Posted August 18, 2007 The 35/2A is on the way out, probably the CV15 too, and I have a Noctilux on order as my 30% lens. I hope to be able to afford the 75/2 at some point, since I think it would be perfect for what I do with machines and technical details, and I would love a CV12, but I really have gone overboard and need to take a break. On the bright side of things, there isn't a lot left that I want. I need to focus on straightening out my finances again now!
hdrmd Posted August 19, 2007 Share #12 Posted August 19, 2007 Carsten: It must be hard to let the 352A go. Mine has been perfect since it's chrome days. Regards. DR
jaapv Posted August 19, 2007 Share #13 Posted August 19, 2007 No problems here. My 90 AA was recalibrated by its previous owner. All other lenses 15 Cv, 21 ZI, 28/28asph, 35asph Summicron, 50/2.8 Elmar, 75 Summilux, 135 Tele elmarit are fine, so I would call your experience not lucky but the norm. Those that had real problems are the unlucky ones imo. Shouldn't happen.
george + Posted August 19, 2007 Share #14 Posted August 19, 2007 My four old lenses and the new 28mm Elmarit work fine. The vc15 is not a problem of course. But my new 35mm Summilux was way off and I am waiting for the replacement.
Iron Flatline Posted August 19, 2007 Share #15 Posted August 19, 2007 No problems since the day I bought my stuff, see profile for gear.
AGeoJO Posted August 19, 2007 Author Share #16 Posted August 19, 2007 Thank you for your feedback, everybody. It seems that my experience is more the norm than just luck then. Dang! I thought I was a lucky guy and I just considered trying my luck in Vegas.... . Oh well, I had to cancel the plan.
carstenw Posted August 19, 2007 Share #17 Posted August 19, 2007 It would be very hard to let go of the 35/2A, were it not for the fact that I am replacing it with a properly focusing 35/1.4A, which is awesome in its own right. Btw, my lens is for sale here, please buy it: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/classifieds/showproduct.php/product/224/cat/

carstenw Posted August 19, 2007 Share #19 Posted August 19, 2007 Too bad the dollar is so weak now. I have a friend who is looking for one. My copy is actually cheaper than the two or three posted with American prices... I guess shipping would take a cut. Know anyone who is travelling to Europe anytime soon?
