The horseshoe crab (not a crab, actually and arthropod) arose 450 million years ago and live in shallow brackish waters with sandy or muddy bottoms.  They come ashore in late spring and summer to mate and lay eggs.  the females are larger than the males' nd often multiple males will fertilize the eggs at the same time.  Like Star Trek's Mr. Spock copper int heir blood caries the oxygen.
