Peter Branch Posted August 24, 2020 Share #1  Posted August 24, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm contemplating buying a Sigma 100 - 400mm L-Mount lens to use on my SL. I can't find anywhere how such a set up handles the Profile of this lens, (or indeed other Sigma lenses). Is it built in like the Leica SL 24 - 90mm etc or is it something applied in Lightroom or .......? I just can't find any information on this subject. Help appreciated. Advertisement Posted August 24, 2020 Posted August 24, 2020 Hi Peter Branch, Take a look here Lens Profiles for Sigma Lenses. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted August 24, 2020 Share #2 Â Posted August 24, 2020 As far as I am aware such profiles are applied by L-mount cameras and embedded in the DNG. For long lenses LR profiles are pretty irrelevant anyway. Maybe a bit of distortion, but who uses a long telezoom for architecture? In general, I find lens profiles for non-hybrid lenses of limited use at best. My advice: forget about this concern.

Thanks for the reply. The implication is that the camera recognises the lens and acts appropriately. This may well be the case but boy is it difficult to find such information. I know what the camera does with Leica lenses and LR tells me that the profile is embedded in the DNG. Your point about long lenses is well taken but other Sigma lenses, such as the fast wide angles, are likely to benefit, (need?),  from some form of profile correction.
jaapv Posted August 25, 2020 Share #4  Posted August 25, 2020 Yes, but lenses in the L system will have full functionality on your SL, including lens corrections, if any ( see Pop's test with a Sigma lens here:
Tailwagger Posted August 26, 2020 Share #5  Posted August 26, 2020 It may perhaps be model (or firmware) dependent. I only have two Sigma-L lenses, but the exhibit different behavior. With images imported from the SL2, if one checks enable profile correction in LR, the Sigma 45mm reports built-in, however the 135mm ART does apply additional corrections.

Distortion correction can be useful photographs with the distant horizon close to the edge of the frame, such as in seascapes. Â Â
jaapv Posted August 27, 2020 Share #7  Posted August 27, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) OK, but that is better with Photoshop, as you can adapt the curvature of the horizon to the subject.
