rjsphd Posted August 23, 2020 Share #1 Posted August 23, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just received the Summicron 35 in the mail and am hearing a faint "thud "sound in the lens as I pan and point the SL2 in different directions. At first I thought it was the image stabilization, since I don't hear it with my 24-90, but I turned image stabilization off and I can still hear the occasional thud as I point the lens in different directions. Its not loud enough for others to hear who aren't holding the camera. I can also hear the motors whirring between thuds, but they are fainter. Is the thudding typical of the primes? If so, Is there a setting on the SL2 to dampen this? (If it is part of the "design", I can get used to it.) Or do I have a bad version? If so, I need to act fast on the return. Thanks, Rob

Jeff S Posted August 23, 2020 Share #2 Posted August 23, 2020 Similar to recent experience on the S1R.... Jeff
rjsphd Posted August 23, 2020 Author Share #3 Posted August 23, 2020 Thanks, Jeff. I am replying here because I am getting this noise on my SL2 (not the S1R) with up-to-date firmware. So is anyone else with a SL2 getting this noise with the 35? I am trying to determine if this is universal to this lens on this camera, or if I have a bum version.
hoppyman Posted August 23, 2020 Share #4 Posted August 23, 2020 I have that lens with the SL2. ( as well as the 50 and 24-90). Mine has only the momentary focus noise when AFS is engaged. With image stabilisation off, have you checked to see if prefocus and AFC are not on? If you have those off, check if they are on in a different profile selection. I discovered by accident when checking for you that it’s possible to hear movement inside the lens even when off, if the camera is abnormally shaken ( not in any normal handling). I think that is a normal part of the mechanism. With the very complex camera function options and some users reporting squeaks and thuds and rattles and noises, it’s hard to pin down specific causes/reasons I think. ( mines a zoom noise with the 24-90, nothing with focus on any of my lenses). I consider that 35 and the summicron 50 to be the best lenses I have ever used.

Sure, I described a similar experience on the S1R. And if you follow all the posts and links in that discussion, mention was made about the SL2 and some Summicrons. rjsphd Posted August 24, 2020 Author Share #7 Posted August 24, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) Jeff, I re-read the other thread you posted above and in it you identified the root cause of the lens noises: the pre-focus setting. When its on, I get the thudding no matter which autofocus mode I choose. When pre-focus is off, the sound goes away. Thank you. Now, the obvious question: what am I giving up by having it in the "off" position?

You may activate the pre-focus when you are 'on session' (if relevant for you); I simply keep it off...
SJH Posted August 24, 2020 Share #9 Posted August 24, 2020 Hi this is normal if you have Pre-focus set to on, there’s another thread re 50mm F2 APO along similar lines. I have both lenses (35/50) and since acquiring my SL2 I’ve turned Pre-focus off, the other issue is that with it on battery life diminishes as well. Jared Posted August 25, 2020 Share #10 Posted August 25, 2020 Yeah, the pre-focus/iAF creates the knocking sound/feeling. Nothing is wrong. However, I would recommend leaving the feature turned off unless you really need it because it truly eats battery life.
