andybarton Posted August 18, 2020 Share #1 Posted August 18, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) Incredibly, this place helped start the Industrial Revolution. Just under the footbridge are the entrances to over 40 miles of underground canals, built to extract coal to power the nation. This canal is still in private hands. This place is no more than 300 - 400 yards away from Manchester's M60 orbital motorway. Welcome, dear visitor! stuny Posted August 19, 2020 Share #2 Posted August 19, 2020 Lovely. Hard to believe it's so close to the filth of coal mining
andybarton Posted August 19, 2020 Author Share #3 Posted August 19, 2020 The water is a rusty brown colour here due to previous seepage from the mines, which has now been stopped. But there is so much on the bottom of the canal that passing boats stir the sediment up.
fotografr Posted August 20, 2020 Share #4 Posted August 20, 2020 What a gorgeous building. Judging by the chimneys, there must be a fireplace in nearly every room. Very nicely photographed.
