I currently have a Q2.  I love the rendering from the lens, but I don't love 28mm and find I'm usually cropping to somewhere in the 35mm range.  I used to own the SL with the Summilux-SL 50.  I'm thinking about moving to the SL2 with the Summilux-SL 50 and getting the Summicron-SL 35 APO.

Will the 35 Cron-SL on the SL2 render in a similar manner to the Q2

Also, as I haven't seen it discussed, will the 35 give me the same sunstars I get with the Q2 if stopped down?

Apart from any other distinctions, cropping the Q2 to 35mm will effectively yield about 30 MP, compared to the ‘full frame’ (dislike that term) SL2 with 47 MP and native SL 35, which is Karbe’s self-proclaimed top performer.

Of course if you change your shooting position to accommodate a different focal length and field of view, then perspective changes.  Best to demo and see for yourself given your shooting style and, hopefully, print results to show the potential of each.

Thanks, Jeff.  I was more interested in the microcontrast and out of focus rendering at the equivalent apertures.  I love how my images look when converted to monochrome with the Q2 and was hoping the SL2, Summicron-SL 35 would give me a similar look.  I'm already familiar with the conversion to monochrome with Summilux-SL 50, which I really love.

SL2 & Apo35 is the very best you can buy - you will love it.

The 35mm Summicron SL is the best lens I have ever owned in terms of micro contrast.  It will be an improvement on the cropped Q2 in that regard.  Enough to matter? It won’t make or break an image, but it is definitely visible on a decent 4K monitor.  As to out of focus rendering and sun stars... I have made sun stars with the 35 Cron stopped down to f/22–works fine and is quite pleasing. The curved aperture blades somewhat minimize the diffraction spikes, but you can certainly generate them by stopping down. Out-of-focus rendering is very much a matter of taste more than anything. You can certainly separate your subject from the background clutter at f/2, perhaps a bit more with the 35 Cron than with the Q2 cropped, but you won’t be able to obliterate backgrounds as you could with, say, the 90mm.  I have never explicitly tested bokeh balls with the 35mm. This isn’t the strength of this focal length, but you will be able to generate reasonable separation or atmospheric portraits and the like. Since the two cameras share the same chip (presumably), there will be more similarities than differences with the edge going to the SL2 and Summicron 35.

I am very pleased with the output of 35mm SL on SL2.

Sl2 with 35 APO is without parallel. Never shot anything better, and the creative freedom offered by the close focussing distance and the fact the image is sharp at f/2 anywhere in the imaging plane. No loss in resolution as you move from he centre of the frame.
