If you are going to 'personalise' it presumably you will never sell it, or be prepared to take a big hit in value, so why not just get a local trophy engraver to do it. I would try and make sure every possible entry point on the body is well covered and sealed. Edited August 20, 2020 by pedaes

They can't guarantee not to damage the paint nearby.
250swb Posted August 21, 2020 Share #9 Posted August 21, 2020 I think you stand a good chance to chip the paint around the engraving, no fault of the engraver but as soon as you go bellow the level of the paint you have an edge where the paint will flake. I think Leica would throw your old top plate away and make a new one with the engraving done before it was painted.
Charles Morgan Posted August 21, 2020 Share #10 Posted August 21, 2020 (edited) Paint flakes and chips very easily when you cut it. Brass left exposed to the air will tarnish, so the best way is completely to strip the top, have it engraved then repainted. If the old paint that is painted over then starts to lift, you will have a hideous looking thing. Your engraver is correct. dabrez Posted August 26, 2020 Share #11 Posted August 26, 2020 Not that I would engrave my M262... but one option to protect from chipping on the the edges of the engraving would be to fill the engraving with paint. Perhaps black if you want a subtle look or you need to correct your engraver's paint damage. Or white if you want a more garish look and the engraver has made no mistakes. jaapv Posted August 27, 2020 Share #12 Posted August 27, 2020 Leica engraved a few black paint cameras for me. Although they do warn that minor chipping might occur, the engravings they did were flawless. But not cheap.

I was thinking to secure the edges with some glue...
