dkCambridgeshire Posted July 27, 2020 Share #1 Posted July 27, 2020 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) The Zacuto Z finders are mainly used by videographers but can be adapted for use on Leica X cameras. I've previously used a Zacuto self-adhesive attachment frame on the X1's monitor enabling a Z finder to 'clip' onto the camera ... thus providing a 2.5x magnified WYSIWYG live view. Unfortunately the self-adhesive frame was not a perfect fit (slightly too large) thus adhesion was compromised by the weight of the finder and it was not 100% sucessful. The viewing experience when it did work was superb so I decided to try and modify a metal Zacuto adjustable gorilla plate to fit the camera. By using a spare Arca plate as a permanent 'spacer', i.e. epoxying it onto the Zacuto gorilla plate base, the adjustable gorilla plate frame now fits the X1 monitor ... enabling the magnified finder to easily clip on and off. The gorilla plate frame is still a little too large for the monitor but the X1's control buttons are accessible using my finger nail. Welcome, dear visitor! The whole point of the modification David is to provide a usable live view without the parallax problems of the X1's optical finder ... 'usable' in all ambient light situations e.g. in bright sunlight which usually compromises or totally obliterates the monitor's live view image. Compact 'it isn't' ... but practical 'it is' ... thus enabling accurate framing / composition in difficult lighting situations. And it works fine. Zacuto finders and plates can be sourced secondhand for £reasonable. BW dunk Edited July 27, 2020 by dkCambridgeshire
jankap Posted July 27, 2020 Share #8 Posted July 27, 2020 I have used the Ricoh M-mount with a Hoodman loupe for several years. It was very useful. I used the same construction with the D-Lux-4. See also the Sigma fp loupe. An EVF and a LCD screen follow more or less the same principle. As an engineer I would propose to the camera developers to try to find a way in between. Namely a smaller LCD screen with a corresponding smaller loupe. The disadvantage would be, that the taken pictures could be shown in a smaller LCD screen to spectators. The advantage would be the smaller construction of the camera during its (intended) use.

Zacuto make / list a finder for the Sigma FP ... should be fairly easy to adapt a s/h Zacuto Z finder to the FP and at £reasonable cost ... they are frequently listed on Ebay ... the self adhesive attachment frames are fine provided they fit the monitor ... I've used them on Nikon 1 J5 cameras for 2 years without mishap. dunk
