Hi all,

I'm looking for some opinions on the LEICA PC-Super Angulon R 2,8/28mm. Has anyone a clue how it does on modern digital cameras? ...in terms of sharpness, resolution and color fringing? I'd like to use it on a Sony A7rIII and currently I'm not sure whether or not the Canon TS-E 24mm would be the better choice. I prefer shift over tilt but the Canon has two other advantages: It's a bit wider and can be extended to ~35mm. Do such extender also exists in the R family and could they applied to Angulon?

...looking forward to find some answers :)

Cheers

Hello Mike, not the best PC lens or the worse, on Leica M for fun I use other PC lenses like PC Nikkor 28mm and 35mm, Olympus Shift 24mm (nice colored filters for Monochrom ), old school manual , ...they are not "better", but I learned to use them.

usable without LV ( yes with confidence as I know the lens behavior ) on M8/M9

Filter can be hard to use with this particular lens:

I currently - by accident, don't ask - have two. I haven't been able to use it much yet because of lockdown, but from what I have done so far, I'm quite impressed. Can't tell you anything about purple fringing yet but for sharpness, resolution and colour it seems very good. I am pleasantly surprised how easy it is to use handheld - I was expecting to have to use a tripod rather more than I have.

On the M10M, full upward shift:

Another, on the SL, 1/20th sec at ISO 6400, so not ideally sharp; full shift up from a seated viewpoint:

I use several shift lenses including the Leica PC 28mm Super Angulon ... it's my most used shift lens and I'm very pleased with its performance. However, in common with all Schneider Super Angulons it images best at smaller apertures ... so I use it at f8 or f11.   https://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/303724-mr-mrs-clarks-gallery-stamford-lincs-uk/

I seldom use a tripod when using shift lenses. With modern digital cameras' high ISO capabilities (compared to film cameras) it's possible to use ISO 800 or 1600 ... enabling hand holdable shutter speeds with excellent results
