Maybe someone can help. on a few shoots not the Flash in TTL or A does not fire.

Looks like this happens when the background in lighter . but in many case I place subject in the same and want to add some lighting the front.

Does anybody has a solution?

I have been using TTL to be able to shoot at higher exposures. this has been happening all the time, the flash didn't ever fire, it is not overheated.

Two thoughts.

What was the shutter speed? You mentioned TTL, but not HSS. It could be that the back-light made the camera select a higher shutter speed, which exceeded the sync speed (1/250). If that's the case you could use shutter-priority (set at 1/250 or less), or a lower ISO.

Were you shooting quickly? Maybe the flash hadn't recharged.

Fresh batteries and not used before. test bottom works fine.

1/250s in Aperture Priority F8

If I focus on a darker section and then shoot it works fine, but like in this photo it should fill the front every time if the flash is on.

TTL-A is the setting that should work especially if the flash is off camera. You will probably need to turn up the power output. This example shot seems to need more  fill flash than just relying on TTL HSS function. HSS kicks in when exposures get above 1/250th, I would open up to 5.6 or increase the iso.

I have the same issue with my SL2 and SF64.  Highlighted this to Leica twice, but no reply.  Apparently, the SL2 works like an idiot proof compact camera when you mount the flash.

If you set it to P mode and it's bright, you can't use it for fill-in flash as the flash won't fire.  Have to set it to M mode and it fires.  Was hoping that Firmware 2.0 would address this issue, but it didn't.

Posted this issue on the SL2 Facebook Page.

I went back to read the SL2 manual and there is nothing that could reflect the problem. It must be a bug in the SL2

It seam to happen in P mode and in A mode, then ever the camera think the exposure is already correct.
When you point the camera to something real dark in the frame and recompose the flash will fire occasionally .

M mode and S mode is able to fire the flash every time.

The Q2 camera works just like aspected under the same condition, so the problem is the SL2.

I’ve been using the SF60 off camera with SF-C1 using TTL / HSS on 'A' mode on both SL & later SL2 and have never encountered such an issue. The only bug which I’ve discovered and have since feedback to Leica is HSS can only be operated in TTL mode and not M mode setting on the flash ( cannot be fired from camera trigger when flash set to M on TTL).

I still think that the shot may have been taken at a speed faster than 1/250.

Two reasons:

The flash apparently did fire when there was no back-light. It was in A mode, so it would have picked a faster shutter speed instead of stopping-down (or lowering the ISO).

The EXIF says that speed = 7.965784. Someone here can translate this number, but it's likely that 1/250 = 8.0, and that this is slightly faster.

My recommendation: if you are shooting flash near the sync speed, switch to shutter-priority or manual.

I challenge you to test it for you self, put camera in P and shoot in a room. than face the window and shoot again, most of the time the flash will not fire

Same issue with SF 40

I have the SL, not the SL2.

It seems like something you should ask Leica technical support. We can all guess (I did), but they should know why the flash did not fire.
