28 mm ‘lux asph front end filter ring question

Hi all

This is most likely a silly question....but here I go 

I just purchased a new 1.4 28 ‘lux.  I also purchased an orange and 4 stop ND filter.  When I tried to screw in the filters after taking off the lens hood, I noticed another “blank” screw in filter/filter ring.    I had to remove this ‘ring” to reveal the inner threads in order to screw in the orange/ND filters.

my question,  when I’m not using a filter, should I replace this Filter ring?  I guess I’m asking what is the purposes of this  filter ring?  To protect the threads?  Other?  The lens hood screws on just fine with/without the filter ring

It does protect the threads.

Thanks..  living in the Las Vegas area with the wind and dust, probably good practice to keep it on when not using a filter.
