chasdfg Posted June 8, 2020 Share #1  Posted June 8, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all, Recently I noticed that approximately one out of ten times when turn my SL off, the camera makes a shutter sound, like an actuation, before it shuts off completely (i.e. in the 1 second or so it before powers off). I can't seem to trigger this consistently but I think it arises when the camera is going through pictures and I, out of habit, tap the shutter to go into shooting mode before hitting the on/off switch. I purchased this camera used earlier this year and only noticed this in the past couple of weeks - this may have been there all along just that with COVID-19 and being housebound most of the time, I have the tendency to pick the camera up to mess about in the house more than usual whilst otherwise I might not have heard this sound outdoors. At first I didn't think anything out of the ordinary about this, largely because the sound was akin to turning an  M240 or M10 off when live view turned on...and then I realised that it's not a normal sound because the SL sensor is always exposed as opposed to having to open the shutter to expose the sensor on the M240/M10. I then tried to identify the sound using a slow shutter speed (e.g. 3 seconds) and it seems that it is not a "full" shutter actuation but rather the front curtain opening and closing (no rear curtain) before the SL shuts off. I have tested the camera at various shutter speeds (fast and slow) and burst modes and the camera records perfectly fine. It works as it should in all respects. I have also updated the camera to the latest firmware and formatted my cards, though I have only just swapped my Sony 64GB card for a Sandisk 32GB one to see if it makes a difference (i doubt it). I spoke to Leica about this and they said if the camera functions fine and I can't consistently reproduce this, this is a not an issue as the "issue" does not occur during shooting but during shutdown (non-critical situation). This said, I should monitor it in any case. Has anyone else experienced this? I've tried searching for other threads on this for SL as well as other mirrorless cameras but only EFCS discussions come up.

At least I'm not alone.. The 30 second window does provide a more precise description of when the sound occurs and I would say most of (if not all) the time I hear that shutter sound in that particular scenario. Would love to hear if others note the same thing, and what the camera might be doing.
not12bhere Posted June 8, 2020 Share #6  Posted June 8, 2020 Both the Leica SL2 and Q2 exhibit this behavior. Both are seemingly random in occurrence. The Leica TL2 also exhibits this behavior seemingly at random. SL2 does not have a self-cleaning process. SL2 will also exhibit a more concerning shutter release button issue where the half -press functionality ceases to register half-presses of the shutter release button. If this happens to you; begin a randomized switching of the on/off lever with and without the shutter release button fully depressed until half-press functionality resumes.

chasdfg Posted October 12, 2020 Author Share #8  Posted October 12, 2020 Just a mini update of sorts. I sold the SL and picked up an SL2 and it too makes a similar noise (when turning off within a minute of turning on or so). I still cannot trigger it "on command" and it is still random. It's normal across different models - at least now i can speak from experience as well. Would be cool to find out what is actually happening but either way a non-issue.
