Leicamateur Posted August 13, 2007 Share #1 Posted August 13, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) It's just a few months that I bought my (new) M Elmar 50mm. I didn't use my M gear for a few weeks as I was traveling... I just took out my M7 and Elmar from my dry cabinet as I planned on using it on a wedding next Thursday. As I was mounting the lens on the camera I suddenly felt kind of stupid... where is the red (dot) marking which indicates how to put the lens on the mount??? Damn... I just bought this thing... the red dot must somehow fallen off... it's not in the dry cabinet, not in the camera bag or the lens case... I have no idea where it went but its gone. Did this happen to any of your (new) lenses? I am somewhat disappointed. Leica stuff is supposedly to be so well built and manufactured. I guess I'll bring it in for service to get a new dot. Somehow ridiculous, but compared to the lens price this dot is pretty expensive, isn't it? Advertisement Posted August 13, 2007 Posted August 13, 2007 Hi Leicamateur, Take a look here Red dot coming off M Elmar?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
marknorton Posted August 13, 2007 Share #2 Posted August 13, 2007 Well, as you can see, it's only stuck on with some glue. Leica will normally send you a replacement free of charge though I have heard of users being charged a boggling amount. If you want to replace it yourself, you need to remove the residual glue with a scalpal, being careful not to slip and damage the finish. Then put the smallest drop of superglue in the centre and press the bump in, holding it in place with tape until set. Make sure you use the smallest amount of glue, otherwise it will leak out at the sides and generally spoil your day.

Leicamateur Posted August 13, 2007 Author Share #4 Posted August 13, 2007 Shouldn't Leica service the lens for free (I still have warranty, it's just a few months old). I don't wanna mess around it myself, I'm just too clumsy Anyway, I guess Leica doesn't use superglue to apply the dots else it would be still on the lens. frc Posted August 13, 2007 Share #5 Posted August 13, 2007 Your opportunity to replace it with a black one came quickly! Very Cool;-)
bill Posted August 13, 2007 Share #6 Posted August 13, 2007 Oh for goodness' sake! You DON'T need to send your lens back, or pay an exhorbitant amount for a new dot. Mine came off after a couple of years - I was in Prague at the time and it was bloody cold so I imagine it turned blue and dropped off. I just 'phoned Leica UK and received a couple in the post a couple of days later, fastened to a compliments slip with sticky tape. A bit of superglue did the trick. Leicamateur Posted August 13, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted August 13, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Your opportunity to replace it with a black one came quickly! Very Cool;-) I think you are suggesting that with a black dot I would be stealthier? Problem is I have a chrome M7, so much for stealth Bill, I will wait after the wedding this Thursday, then call the distributor here in HK how this would be handled. If they have to send it back to Germany or something like that I won't do it. Maybe they just send me some spare dots as well and I'll do it myself. I successfully superglued one of my Reebok shoes recently I guess I can manage that nasty dot as well. Thats another thing... these were supposed to be running shoes and they were broken after less than 10 months... lame.
wizard Posted August 13, 2007 Share #8 Posted August 13, 2007 Same thing happened to me a while ago, also with a black Elmar-M. I was lucky, however, and found the red dot in my camera bag. Glued it back on as described by others before, no problems since then. Leica HK must have those red dots, they will surely give you one or two of those for free. miami91 Posted August 13, 2007 Share #9 Posted August 13, 2007 I think you are suggesting that with a black dot I would be stealthier?Problem is I have a chrome M7, so much for stealth I think he's confusing your red dot lens button for the red dot camera badge (the Leica logo covering the rangefinder adjustment). I've heard of people spray painting the Leica logo on their cameras black to make it look like some of the special addition cameras (black paint LHSA edition). I haven't heard of doing this with the red alignment dot on a lens barrel. I think most people accept the red color of these. Jeff.
earleygallery Posted August 13, 2007 Share #10 Posted August 13, 2007 Looks like a screw head under there so you might not want to use superglue which could make it difficult to remove in future. It looks as though Leica use some of that sticky 'foam' stuff. You could also just cut out a circular piece of red sticky label and fit that into the depression, or even leave as is - but my guess is that Leica will send you a new dot. Leicamateur Posted August 14, 2007 Author Share #11 Posted August 14, 2007 James, you're right, that might be a screw head so superglueing isn't such a good idea after all. That would also explain why Leica doesn't use superglue.
wizard Posted August 14, 2007 Share #12 Posted August 14, 2007 James, Marc, when the red dot came off my Elmar lens, there wasn't any screw (I would not have superglued the dot otherwise). What you see are the remainders of the original glue and a small depression in the center of the larger shallow recess which accomodates the red dot. Glue it on again and everything will be fine! peter_n Posted August 19, 2007 Share #13 Posted August 19, 2007 It may be the humidity in HK. I was in Fiji recently for a few weeks and the red dot came off my 35/1.4 ASPH and also my 50/1.4 pre-ASPH. I'm hoping Leica NJ will send me free replacements.
