I love the lens and am currently on my third one. My original was a new first version I bought around 1999/2000 for a trip to Australia. It performed well for about five years before it stopped selecting the correct framelines. I sent it back to Germany and it was repaired. However, after another couple of years the same thing happened and so I traded it. (I did make David Stephens aware of the problem.) I missed it so much I bought another one and again had the same problem.

I read somewhere that the second version was mechanically modified and about two months ago I saw a clean one being advertised on ebay and so I took the plunge. So far everything is fine and hopefully it will remain so for years to come. Because of my experience I would recommend anyone considering buying one to go for the later version.

I have two version II 49mm with their lens-hoods and protection filters, both Leica-Wetzlar controlled, (which is 50km from here) in very good condition.

Liking the lens so much, that it gave me my pen-name on this forum from the very beginning, I bought  a second identical one just in case, reading about the mechanical issues, that could occur.
Never had a problem though, so I‘m ready to sell one within the EU. If an offer comes in and a fair deal materializes, of cause I pay Andreas the full classified fee.

How does the non-coded MATE work with the M10 as far as whatever image correction is involved in the Leica system?  I see in the Lens menu that there is a selection for each of the focal lengths of a Tri Elmar individually.   So, as I understand it,  for optimum quality you have to manually select the focal length you are using in the menu when you switch between them.  That would not be something I would want to bother with.  Does it make a noticeable difference quality-wise if the lens/focal length is selected or not?

Were any MATEs coded or were they out of production before digital Leica's/coding?

The last batches released were coded. My V2 was not coded, though Leica UK sent it back to Germany,  for me, to be factory coded and recalibrated.

I have a Tri-Elmar 28-35-50 49mm that is in beautiful condition and it is not 6 bit. Great lens especially with the M10-R and the ISO capacity.  I previously owned the same model that was 6 bit.  The problem was that when changing the focal length say from 50 to 28 the Visoflex shut off. Is there a solution and do others have the same problem?

I’m not being judgemental or picky here but why would you use a Visoflex with that lens?

I guess because it needs the 6-bit code to read the focal length.

A nice lens, I sent mine in recently (earlier post) for 6-bit coding and overhaul.  I am very happy with the MATE (later 49mm version).

Attached are a few representative shots from last months trip to Hawaii, all are at f4.

Painted Church is at 28mm, 1/30 sec, ISO 1250; Kilauea Coast is 35mm, 1/750 sec, ISO 200; Sanctuary National Park is at 50mm, 1/500 sec, ISO 100.

The six bit code tells the camera what lens. focal length is set by the cam when the frame lines are switched. There would have to be three six bit codes. One for each focal length.

Rick, you have produced a fine representative set of TE 28/35/50 pictures. The first one is particularly good for the 28 mm setting, which is very slightly less good than the other two focal-lengths.
