echorec Posted August 12, 2007 Share #1 Posted August 12, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) What are your favourites? I decided to not jump on the M8 train so I got the 5D and want to try some Leica glass on it. I have some M equipment but am a complete newbie when it comes to R lenses. Advertisement Posted August 12, 2007 Posted August 12, 2007 Hi echorec, Take a look here Favourite 28-50 R lenses? (for EOS 5D). I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stunsworth Posted August 12, 2007 Share #2 Posted August 12, 2007 Gunnar, I have 28 and 35 at f2.8 and a 40mm Summicron. If I had to choose just one it would be the Summicron. It's a very sharp lens any the photographs from the 5D look superb. All these lenses are bargains at the moment. One thing to bear in mind is that you may find that the 5D overexposes slightly with a non-coupled lens such as the Leicas. I ave a -2/3rd of a stop exposure compenation dialled in when I'm using them.
echorec Posted August 12, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted August 12, 2007 Hello Steve, Thanks for the quick reply. Did you mean the 50mm or did they make a 40mm for the R series too? I have only seen the M 40 for the CL. Best, Gunnar
stunsworth Posted August 12, 2007 Share #4 Posted August 12, 2007 Sorry, finger problems. Yes, I meant 50mm.
echorec Posted August 12, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted August 12, 2007 Thanks, I´ll get the 50 ´cron to start with. I guess the later version is better than the first?
stunsworth Posted August 12, 2007 Share #6 Posted August 12, 2007 I have an early one that came with an SL, and a much more recent 3 Cam version. The later is the better lens, but the earlier one isn't bad either.
Cindy Flood Posted August 13, 2007 Share #7 Posted August 13, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a 35 cron that I used on my 5D and have kept for my Xti. I also had a 50 cron when I had my 5d. Both crons are excellent on the 5D. It would be purely a matter of which focal length you prefer.
andybarton Posted August 13, 2007 Share #8 Posted August 13, 2007 I have the ROM'd versions of both the 28 and the 50, so they are both current lenses. I used to have the non-ROM'd version of the 28, but sold it to Steve (That one wasn't bad either, and is considerably cheaper. If I hadn't come into some surprise cash, I wouldn't have bought the newer one) Both of the above are fine lenses - the 28 is probably my standard lens, but the 50 doesn't get much of a look in these days. However, if you can find one in good condition, go for the 60 Macro-Elmarit, which IMHO, is outstanding as a "standard" lens, and even more outstanding as a Macro. topoxforddoc Posted August 13, 2007 Share #10 Posted August 13, 2007 If money's no object, how about the 28-90 asph? I use this on my R9/DMR and it takes probably 70% of all my shots Charlie
echorec Posted August 13, 2007 Author Share #11 Posted August 13, 2007 Hi Charlie, Well, money is an object but I will certainly check that one out. I have the Canon 24-105 which is nice but is has distorsion on the wide settings.
martinb Posted August 13, 2007 Share #12 Posted August 13, 2007 Gunnar, Good to see you around here! I would recommend the 28mm Elmarit (latest version) and a 50mm summicron. If you like shooting film an used R8 will be fun to have as well.
echorec Posted August 13, 2007 Author Share #13 Posted August 13, 2007 Hi Martin, Nice to see you too I´m searching ebay & have listed some want-ads over here so let´s see what I´ll find.
S. Wong Posted August 14, 2007 Share #14 Posted August 14, 2007 You might get more responses if this is moved over to the customer or digital forums The film forum gets the least action of them all, I believe I feel that I am an unreliable source to answer your question, as I've only owned/used the 1st version 50 lux and 28 elmarit. The 28 has a hood for retaining the series VII filters, and I've never found one at a price I was willing to pay ($30 seems steep to me). I've not had an issue with it that I can remember, shooting all types of film. I had an issue with vignetting when I put the 50's hood on, so that stayed on the 50 until I got a step-up ring from 48-55mm filters so that all lenses used the same e55. Often its just come down to what I'm shooting and the time of day. For indoors/darker situations, I prefer the 50 For the Leica One challenge in SF around Christmas last year, I chose the 28 over my 135, but didn't even bring the 50. I find life much simpler when working with only 2 choices. If I were to go it again, my preferences might push me towards a 35 lux or cron if it was reasonable (of course, your price range might vary, but I can't justify more than $300 for a lens, and I've managed to stay with that budget, picking up the 135 & a 80-200/4.5) Its never been an option for me to test one Leica variant vs another. -Steven
dkCambridgeshire Posted August 16, 2007 Share #15 Posted August 16, 2007 Also consider the 60mm F2.8 Macro Elmarit ... it is a superb lens and cheap secondhand. Assuming it can be used on the 5D without causing mirror problems. Dunk
gvaliquette Posted August 16, 2007 Share #16 Posted August 16, 2007 I find that I like the 24mm Elmarit-R a lot, particularly with the DMR. Too bad it still uses the antiquated "Series" filters and does not have a built-in retractable hood.
telyt Posted August 18, 2007 Share #17 Posted August 18, 2007 If money's no object, how about the 28-90 asph? I use this on my R9/DMR and it takes probably 70% of all my shots Charlie This lens might have mirror clearance problems on the 5D.

echorec Posted August 19, 2007 Author Share #19 Posted August 19, 2007 Thanks for all the replies and friendly advice! This forum is great. How about the SA 21/4? Has anyone tried that on a Canon? Best, Gunnar
echorec Posted August 21, 2007 Author Share #20 Posted August 21, 2007 I was able to borrow a 50mm and I bought the adapter with "focus confirmation". Works like a charm! Welcome, dear visitor!
