Advertisement Posted April 27, 2020 Posted April 27, 2020 Hi Herr Barnack, Take a look here A new M mount 50mm f/2 Sonnar is coming. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
LocalHero1953 Posted March 19, 2023 Share #2 Posted March 19, 2023 I have just seen this update on the Skyllaney website. Looks interesting. Pity it isn't in LTM as well!
Herr Barnack Posted March 19, 2023 Author Share #3 Posted March 19, 2023 (edited) It's good to hear that this lens will finally be coming to the marketplace; I was beginning to wonder what happened to it. It sounds like what happened was normal growing pains - Quote ...The original design has been revised multiple times after consulting Sonnar experts and enthusiasts to arrive at the best final product we could deliver. The manufacturing process took much longer than we expected... Much to their credit, Skyllaney Opto-Mechanics made the decision to delay launch rather than send a product to market that was"more or less right." That bodes well for those of us who will invest in this lens. Edited March 19, 2023 by Herr Barnack
Ray Vonn Posted March 19, 2023 Share #4 Posted March 19, 2023 Pleased to see Brian Sweeney (or "Sonnar Brian") providing significant input to the maker of this lens too.
Rollin Posted June 5 Share #5 Posted June 5 (edited) Chris Andreyo, Managing Director & Head Engineer at Skyllaney Opto-Mechanics in Scotland, has published a technical white paper on the unique Floating Lens Block (FLB) Technology which addresses focus shift in the upcoming UK made Omnar Bertele FLB 50mm f/2 Sonnar: https://skyllaney.com/floating-lens-block-technology/ Peer reviewed by Brian "Sonnar Brian" Sweeney. TomB_tx Posted June 5 Share #6 Posted June 5 Interesting white paper. When I tested my first Nokton 35 f1.4 v1 and documented its significant focus shift, I wondered if it could be compensated by a second helical operated by the aperture ring, but not something for a hobbyist to try. Nice to see that the idea had merit!

Vanillasludge Posted June 5 Share #8 Posted June 5 Now THIS is the kind of interesting non-oem lens stuff I love. These aren’t fake versions of something else and they actually offer users something new. I hope they can keep the extremely tight tolerances in check once the lenses are in the ape-like hands of the public.
Kiwimac Posted June 6 Share #9 Posted June 6 Looks very nice. Quite a saving if you order from the later batches too.
Kiwimac Posted June 6 Share #10 Posted June 6 Well that’s not at all clear. The word deposit doesn’t even feature in the lines for the later units. Only the word ‘price’. Welcome, dear visitor! LocalHero1953 Posted June 6 Share #11 Posted June 6 Ambiguous wording on the website. But I suspect it simply means that the price is the same for each batch, but the deposit is less for later batches. I have absolutely no need for such a lens, and 50mm is a FL I usually migrate away from to 35 or 75 - but it's still tempting!

I already have a superb 50 in the form of the 11811 version of the Apo Summicron so no driving need for another. It is tempting though as you say. I think M mount makers are all part of a dastardly plot to bankrupt photographers!

These days you can't call yourself an artist if you don't have several sets of lenses; each with different characteristics: 😉 Technically perfect Close focusing As fast as possible As small as possible As many optical flaws as possible Reissue of classic lenses Reinterpretation of classic lenses General purpose Special bling editions Historically significant Small craft artisan manufacturer releases Edited June 6 by FrozenInTime 2

You’ve posted the immediately available one. The page I posted is Batch 3. Edited June 6 by Kiwimac

Yes; you are probably right and you will get a lens for £500 + VAT.

Yeah, they might've added this note later: Please note: the total price of the lens is the same regardless of the batch, we are simply offering a lower deposit on future batches as delivery will be further into the future. Someone understands the time value of money!
Eoin Posted June 6 Share #19 Posted June 6 This is a deposit against the final total price. They have also added the text above the price for batch 2 & 3

Fool that I am, I've placed a deposit for the second batch, hoping that some of the teething problems found in the first batch will be sorted by then. I don't need this lens, but I'm attracted to creative mechanical engineering, I believe Skyllaney/Omnar understand their lenses and optics, I'm keen to support them, and I'm curious how it will perform. I note that it should also work without vignetting on that Hasselblad/Fuji medium format body I don't have and never intend to buy. I ordered the satin black finish, with no engraving. 2
