I tried to examine some scratching I did on my MP (very minor) with my macro lens and it turned out as a fun experiment. I figured it would be nice to share.

Left of top plate

This one I have no idea where it's coming from but I guess it's fine. Probably when I carry it in my car. This side rests inside the compartment on rubber. Maybe the rubber rubs? :)

Advance Lever (quite sexy)

The brassing on the advance lever I find beautiful.

The MP was manufactured in January 2020 and purchased by me in February. I have shot around 20 rolls through it.

Blimey, that was quick!

Indeed! I would've asked if that's normal but I see other people reporting brassing on the advance lever after a few weeks, so I guess it was built like that. I think some parts are softer than others. I hope I'll like how it looks as time passes, but I don't see why not...

i think my sixteen year old MP was that bad after four or five years in its life. Even then I know the paint wear was from when I'd be wearing a winter jacket with a zipper or metal buttons. I've never shoved it into a tight fitting camera bag with a zipper, but this could also cause wear. I don't think you need to pamper it, that isn't the point, it's just a camera, but if you don't know what is happening to it, well that is the problem.

I also do not use a camera bag, I like to always have it ready to shoot. I honestly do not know where those scratches came from. When I drive, I put it in the compartment under the arm rest, and exactly that part touches the bottom of the compartment, which is rubber. Roads are not very good where I live so the bumps might have caused, but either way I would have imagined rubber to not be so bad for paint. I should not concern myself with this and just use the camera as I would any other object without pampering and see where it takes me :)

This isn't brassing from normal use, it's being scratched.

If your camera has a neck strap, try hanging it from a car seat headrest when you're driving.  Don't park your vehicle and leave it there, though!

Yeah, definitely being scratched when it comes to the top plate one, the scratches are visible if you view the image 100%. The advance lever is not being scratched though, I think that is normal... I will try your suggestion. I had that idea too but I was afraid of it bouncing around too much hanging from the headrest...

That looks a bit rough and not like any brassing I've experienced. On the edges, it usually wears through to a smooth line and takes many months to years. My 4 year old camera below (which, other than my iPhone, is the camera I use most often) has brassed only quite subtly but that might be because I tend to keep it in a neoprene case when it isn't hanging round my neck or being held in my hand.

I think your film advance lever is also being scratched.  Normal brassing has softer edges, see  Wattsy's post above.  My MP lever is brassing similar to the one on his M-A whilst yours is showing more abrasion and some superficial damage to the metal.

Whilst normal signs of wear is to be expected, I'd be inclined to remove the camera from the cause of the damage.

I honestly don't see how that's possible. The only things that the advance lever is touching are either my finger when advancing it or my clothes (no zippers) when carrying. Since we're mostly indoors now that didn't happen much. Do take into consideration that the photograph is with a macro lens which exaggerates the situation (look at the "Overview" photo taken with my phone instead).

Nevertheless I will think about it and see if it's possible that they are both being scratched. The camera mostly sits on the table when at home.

Scratches like those on your camera are the result of small impacts that chip bits of paint off rather than gradually thinning the paint to the point the brass shows. So as I said before look out for zips, but also hard plastics, rings, etc., and generally anything that is rubbing at right angles to the edge of the top plate. And if it is only that top edge of the top plate getting chipped it should give a further clue about what is doing it. Sometimes these things can't be avoided though, everybody uses their camera differently and wears different clothes or jewellery or has different camera bags etc.

Could it be a painting defect? If the underlying brass wasn’t 100% free of oils on that corner before painting, the paint would not adhere properly. The slightest contact could cause flaking.

This is 1 month of wear?!?!

Inconceivable.

I guess so. Let’s assume that the nastier one is the result of some sort of accident that I wasn’t aware of. There are some scratches. However the advance lever I suspect is just regular wear. But as you can see others suspect it’s not. I have seen others on the forum with brassing around the lever only after a few weeks.

I have to admit I was surprised myself. Honestly I try to take good care of the camera. Worth noting that it never goes in a bag because I always want to have it ready to shoot.

As others have said, that's a surprisingly short time to get to that level of wear.  But people like the brassed look of Leica cameras and I guess you won't have to use the camera for years to get it 😀

I reminds me of when the M9 came out. Someone posted a pic of his 2-3 month (IIRC) old camera showing how coooool it looked because it had brassed so much. It was so obvious the guy had taken a file to the thing it was ridiculous. 😂
