I picture them as a the two old men in the balcony on the Muppets. Only these guys aren't funny. I feel a little sorry for people like that.

LOL!!

It looked more like dis- and mis- information to me :) Not much contemptible about it, but I went to clear Guy's name :)

But then people probably think I'm a "fanboy", just because I own a lot of Leica stuff! They should see the Canon stuff I own! :)

Sol--Vivek and Doug aren't Muppets!! Ok, so my son thinks I do a good Cookie Monster, and I'm down with that :)

for the record, the two old guys in the muppets are Statler and Waldorf, named after hotels in new york city, adding to the funny, Waldorfs wife is named Astoria!

I knew something good could come of this. I love this kind of trivia.

I haven't bothered with Photo.net for a really LONG time ...

I ought to follow your lead... Jamie and Jack, thanks for the backup! As it turns out the "Tom Murray" fellow is another alias created by "Jay"... and I hate seeing Guy smeared like that, he absolutely does not deserve it.

Thanks folks . it really gets down to ill informed and just not knowing what the differences are between systems , lenses and such and most folks will defend there purchases to others. human nature when your spending a lot of money. Anyway i do have a thick skin and as vocal as i am on this forum alone i do expect this type of reaction sometimes. The bad part is you have to defend your reputation in these conversations and let's face it , really that is all we have is our reputations and experience in the field you are in. I see this stuff all the time and it is a shame that not just me but many others run into stuff like this. Sean has had his moments and others as well. Really not much we can do and i just ignore this stuff anymore.

Okay for the record though my relationship with leica is one of close professional friendship and also as a beta tester and i also have a NDA which other beta testers don't . Does Leica tell me stuff about product and such. Answer sometimes , the Summarits were a surprise. Even though I begged them to come out with a line like this, which they did. i probably had nothing to do with it but still made me feel good. What i truly am more than anything else is a happy customer and a Pro that likes to help them and also more important the end users. I find this role as something that is gratifiying to me and reason i go completely out of my way to help users and in the process hopefully give leica some good advice. I don't get paid for anything from them, but there nice to me also . They have sent hats and books and just friendly stuff for helping. I really like this relationship with my camera company and reason i said many times to all of you to get to know your dealers and leica sales reps. these folks will help you when you need it. Now i am not trying to tout my own horn here but just clear the air. i love leica glass and will always hold that as the highest value of Leica , the bodies are second but important also. My only hope in all the time i spend here is that i helped make the M8 transition easier for you folks and any advice i have given has proved to be of value to you. And yes i will admit i am a really nice guy too. LOL That was my pat on the back.

let's move on though , this is not about me . But i do appreciate very highly the folks i know try and go to bat for me.

Photo.net, or rather the Leica section, has become a wasteland over the last 12 months or so. A lot of people seem to have left. Trashing anything and everything made by Leica is standard by some of the participants, usually people who don't use anything made by Leica and see them only as rich boys toys.

Anyhow, I've left a message of support for Guy. As I said there I've had a couple of arguments with Guy here, but I don't doubt either his integrity or his enthusiasm.

Is that place not moderated? When someone crosses the line they really ought to get a warning, and then the boot.
... that's pretty subjective and is also is tied to a forum's tolerance. Putts gets his beatings from this forum, along with Reichman, Reid etc................. so in order to improve the situation some of you guys are wading in boots and all and a can of petrol......... go figure that out

Hi Guys,

It was the first time in, what must seem like years now, that I actually read what people have to say on photo.net. I am one of the people that made the switch from Canon to a Leica M8, knowing all the problems like the AWB, Magenta Casts, Backfocus and whatever else was reported. I sold off my entire Canon system incl lenses and flashes etc. and then waited 4 months for my M8 to arrive.

There is no comparison. In much the same way as Guy, who I think does and has posted some exceptional work, I was blown away by the quality of the images.

Please don't get me wrong here. The M8 was my first Leica, let alone a rangefinder. The first photo's I took were dismal. I could have taken better photo's with a disposable. It certainly is a system that you have to learn and get used to. It reminds me of my medium format days.

Below I have posted an image that would have been near impossible to take with a Canon/Nikon alternative. This image was taken in the Sudwala Caves, the only light being the dim lamps they have for the tours. It is really dark - so much so that any autofocus system would have failed. It was kid's play to focus with the M8.

Guy, if you do get sometime to read this post, I take my hat off to you and the work that you do (one day I hope to get images like you take them), and too hell with what everyone has to say. At the end of the day, it is the client that pays for the work that has to be satisfied. The M8 delivers.

Sudwala Caves, cv 40mm Nokton, ISO 1250, 1/30 sec, -0.3 ev, f/2.0.

I haven't read the DPReview thread and, with any luck, I won't. Some people clearly love that kind of soap opera over photography itself and so they write posts designed to incite.

Last fall, I contacted Guy and then Leica and suggested that the company start to involve Guy in some beta testing, dialog, etc. The amount of effort he put into exploring and posting about the DMR really made him someone Leica should be talking with and I told them that and then put the needed people in communication. I think Guy and others may have given more exposure to the DMR than did Leica itself (only partly hyperbole). Since then, Guy is one of many people who have put a lot of time and energy into helping communications between Leica and forum members.

Guy clearly enjoys exploring and writing about Leica products and loves the exchange of ideas that can happen on good forums. Unpaid for sure, he devotes far more time to doing this than most would be willing or able to afford. He is one of many people, all over the world, who keep in communication with Leica, make suggestions, advocate, perhaps beta test, etc. The improvements and new products that we see from Leica come, in part, from the efforts of these people (some of whom work quietly behind the scenes). Naturally, various people are under NDAs at various times and often, one requirement of an NDA is that one not even mention that he or she has signed one. Some of these people are also not very active on forums.

I think that Guy genuinely loves Leica equipment and that his enthusiasm for it comes from his own experiences and certainly not from any inducements by Leica itself. When he first began putting so much energy into the discussion of the DMR, he had no real relationship with Leica. It was all his own excitement and energy that drove his DMR uber-thread and I think it still is that energy that drives his communication about the M8 and lenses.

Firmware improvements, new lenses, maybe even weather sealing (one day) come about both through the efforts of many people and through internal decisions and priorities at Leica. One thing that the new lenses make clear is that Leica does indeed understand that the M system will grow better if the price of entry (body plus lenses) is more affordable. That's a point that's been made by many over several years.

Lastly, with all due respect to whomever started this thread, I think some threads may not deserve the added attention of being posted in other forums. It can tend to fan the fire rather than letting the usual stupidity burn itself out.

Cheers,

Sean
