3rd party flash for SL2

What's the situation on using 3rd party flash on the SL2. For example, the Profoto B2 250 Air system.

I have the B10s and the Profoto TTL Fujifilm remote from a previous set up.  Fires in manual mode without a problem. No TTL and HSS tough. If you buy new, just get the standard Profoto remote. If you experience strange behaviour in the EVF/LCD turn off the exposure preview in camera settings.

Or just put a Vello hotshoe adapter on the Leica. then exposure preview is not affected  plus adds a pc connection

The Profotos work fine in manual mode with the camera also in manual mode and exposure preview set to P-A-S.  No HSS or TTL, obviously.  Still, most photographers working with off camera flash prefer manual mode anyway for the additional control, so it’s really just the loss of HSS that can be convenient in some outdoor situations.

Godox works really well. I use the canon fit. No HSS or TTL, but because of the limitations it’s unexpectedly making me learn and become better at using flash!

Hi,

I´m using a Nissin MG10 I bought used but like new and a Leica SF C1 in same condition, the MG10 as far as I know is the only non-Leica flash that works with the Leica trigger.
TTL works flawless, consistent and accurate.
The MG10 is powerful and easy to handle, I really like the combo, its cheaper that the trigger and a Leica SF40 an muuuuch more powerful with faster recycling times.

I have the same set up with two additional SF60s for my off camera flash set. With Lition batteries on the MG10, it holds shots and recycles really fast.

I have a Leica SF C1 And I am looking for a second flash to use with my SF 60. Does it matter which version of the Nissan flash  that I get – – Nikon, Canon…?  I will be firing from my C1.

In theory, all Nissan NAS system flash can be controlled by SFC1, but in realise only those Nissan flashes produced after the SFC1 releases can recognise it. Otherway is to bring the older flashes to Nissan for latest firmware download. I've tried on actual i60A, it pairs with the SFC1 but the camera cannot trigger the flash after successful pairing.

Thank you.  I have been in contact with Nissan and they warned me that I need a flash with the latest firmware to work with the SF C1, otherwise, it must be sent into the company for an update.  I was going to purchase a used or open box version from a retailer at much lower price, but now I will likely buy from the Nissan web store.

I just purchased Nissin's brand new MG80 Pro (Canon version--an on camera and smaller, lighter version of the MG10 with a traditional flash rather than potato masher-style form factor), thinking that I could use it with the SFC1, off camera. No luck. It sort-of pairs, and once paired, the SFC1 will fire a test flash, but nothing else works. When the SFC1 is in the hot shoe, it does not fire the MG80. I contacted Nissin and they said that I need to ask Leica to upgrade the SFC1 firmware. 

I remember that the first release of the MG10 also had the same problem, but it was Nissin who issued new firmware fixing the problem.  They said they might issue new firmware several months from now but were vague and cryptic, even suggesting that I return the flash to my dealer for a refund.

What's the best way to contact Leica about this? And why would they have any interest in fixing the problem, given that the older SF60 competes with Nissin's new flash?

Write an email to Leica's Customer Service and the reps should respond. Hopefully they can get Leica software engineers to include the MG80 code in a new firmware download onto SFC1.

On the contrary, why not ask Nissin to produce a leica version since the physical pins layout are identical to Nikon version. This way you can mount the MG80 on your Leica SL/SL2 hotshoe and control SF60 & MG10?

Regarding Nissin, I can't imagine that they would produce a Leica-compatible version under their own logo, since a) they are a Leica partner and would compete directly with Leica's own SF60 offering, probably violating their OEM agreement, b) the market is too small to care about.  Leica paid them to develop a Leica=branded version of the SFC1. I can't see a reason why Leica would pay them to develop a Leica compatible version of the MG80 (under Nissin's brand or Leica's brand), which, while having similar specs as the SF60, is actually a higher end product (designed to fire many sequential flashes without overheating, much better battery choices), much as I'd love it if they would.

Then I suggest we each individually write to Leica to ask for a SF80 that can trigger and control off camera SF60s.

I am hopping that Nissin will soon offer a round head option or adapter like Godox V1. It would be very useful to throw just a kiss of light onto the subject’s face to remove unwanted shadow coming from an on camera flash either firing alone with Ambient light as main or together with other off camera flashes for portrait shots.

With Leica SFC1 I couldn't trigger from the shutter on the Leica SL2 when paired with the nissin Air R.

I tried pairing it with the nissin i60a, but it didn't work either. With cameras other than Leica, I was able to trigger from the shutter.

Is it possible to pair with each other but not use another company's strobe?
