A specialist piece of kit. What targets do you have in mind?

Cityscape photography mostly, architecture, landscapes, skies.

In my professional work I do photography to create CG environments (ones that replace green screen) for feature film, TV shows, music video and advertising. I generate digital backgrounds from photos I take, creating panoramic photography, textures to be used in 3D software like Maya, it's mostly combined with digital paintings I create in Photoshop. Sometimes I'm selling my traditional photography images, mostly to real estate developers, musicians and celebrities in LA.

Thanks a lot David! I'm just an inspired artist with the camera.

Here is some first tests I did today, at Palisades Park in Santa Monica it was rainy day by the Pacific. Performance of this lens is absolutely stunning, sharpness, how it handles, so exciting to see images in Lightroom, it's a gem!

All photos taken with 100 ISO using tripod.

Check them at my full res images on Flickr, you be able to see in my profile more images : <a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/edwardgrad/49607854248/in/dateposted/" title="L1000611-2"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49607854248_9965d6a825_6k.jpg" width="6000" height="4000" alt="L1000611-2"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Screen grabs added below... not the same quality as what I posted on Flicker. Compression kills the quality of this amazing lens.

Nice warm colors of the street, nothing edited in Lightroom it's just a screen grab of RAW file.

Comparing TL 135mm lens vs. APO Telyt-R 180mm lens coverage area.

I went to Marina DelRey and took a shot there today with APO Telyt 180mm, back at home I realized that I previously took a shot at the same spot few month ago with 135mm TL.

You can use the Leica M to L adapter stacked with a cheap "dumb" R to M adapter and save a few hundred $$. It won't transmit the focal length (about the only sensible thing the ROM does) but it will allow you to use the thumb wheel for magnification. And, if you consider that this will be your only R lens, the focal length in EXIF has not that much relevance. Additionally, you will be able to mount M lenses without further cost, if so desired.

I have a question for you. For my Leica CL I got "dumb" Fotasy R-L adapter and it won't zoom in to focus with Left wheel anymore, very frustrating. I'm using it with my Leica R lens, when I was using it with Leica R-L Adapter it was able to zoom in in live view to focus.

Yes, this has been asked and answered dozens of times. The only adapter that enables magnification with the wheel is the original Leica one. For all other adapters you need to use the arrow keys.

  • 2 weeks later...

I been testing my equipment and I noticed that people do complaint a lot about quality of non APO Extender-R2x, which I got a month ago in great condition for $50, manufactured around 1981 according to serial number. I use Extender-R2x with APO Telyt-R 180mm on Leica CL (R-M and M-L adapters). It's a really inexpensive and effective solution to get double in focal length.

Yes I must agree it's not easy to focus, but once you got it, images look great, I don't see much milky rendering going on, photo just looks more flat.

I would say the best image quality comes out between f stop 8-11.

Sharing my tests below taken with tripod, no adjustments applied, last image no extender.

Photo taken handheld at f8 using Extender-R 2x with APO Telyt-R 180mm on Leica CL (R-M and M-L adapters).

Note! These images does not look sharp below as in Lightroom, because of web JPG compression.

Adjust your sharpening for screen in the export dialogue. Sharpness is not so much affected by JPG compression as by resizing. And with the 2kB limit for sponsoring members you will always be in the maximum JPG quality range

From these examples I would prefer cropping over the extender.
